I thought the way to go was two images, one exposed for the brighter, and one for the darker and merge in your editor.
One can fake it by processing the one image similarly for two different exposures and merge likewise,
(my toppence).
Yes, I agree with you Fons, normally I would have bracketed five exposures at .3 stop but I was just having a casual walk with my son on the fells, not really geared up for masterpieces! We are going up again this afternoon, exploring slate mines this time... Who know what I will come back with.

I forgot to take a CF Card.
Mind you we did explore one of the mines, unofficially. Enormous caverns below ground blasted out of solid rock. It keep this post on topic, there must have been clouds of smoke from all the black powder used to blast the tunnels.
