Same premises, but this time with the Voigtländer 40/2 at f/2.8, for a change...

With shots like that... I'm having a hard time resisting picking that lens up.   Local shop has one for a reasonable sum...hmmmm.

The Voigtlander 40/2 is excellent and very versatile.  I use it mainly on the FM3 as a normal lens, but on DX it is useful as a loose portrait lens, and, because a close-up lens is included, it is especially useful on DX as an ultra-light weight "I wish I had a macro".

Indeed. The 180 is heavy and cumbersome, and that is the only reason why I do not have so many shots available. It is wise to have an alternative in the pocket. The 40/2 is probably even more useful on FX. Make sure you buy it with the close-up lens.

Indeed. The 180 is heavy and cumbersome...

It is, and the first time I handled one, I thought it the upper end of what people would want to carry—until I tried a Nikkor AF 70-200mm f/2.8. Suddenly, the 180/2.8 Ais seems svelte and almost light.

I agree completely. Now, however, after handling a 70-200mm f/2.8, I'm very comfortable with my 180/2.8 Ais.

I also have a Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar, which is similar in size, but a little bulkier, a little heavier.  Both serve a similar function, so I had planned to sell the 180, because, as everyone "knows", the Zeiss is superior.

And yet, each time I use the 180/2.8, I'm struck by how balanced it feels, what a joy it is to use, and how much I like the images it produces. In the end, I kept both. I use the 180/2.8 for walking around, just enjoying informal, enjoyable photography. If I get serious enough to use a tripod, I break out the Zeiss.
