Nikon + Samsung
« on: December 02, 2015, 13:34:15 »
Interesting development! What can possibly come from this union?
Hopefully Nikon, which has been rather silent lately, can soon show us something interesting in the mirrorless area.

What do you think?

Well, interesting idea whether substantiated or not. Plus, Samsung apparently *is* closing down their NX camera line at least in Europe. Perhaps something is afoot here?

I am using V1s and a V3 and really like them. But sometimes I wish for a slightly bigger chip.

Due to my ageing eyes I really look forward to a mirrorless equivelent to Df och D700 (which I have).
Of course if true, it's going to take at least until fall of 2016 to produce some substantial result. FotoKina will be interesting!

Same here, but I do use a V1 and a V2, plus a D600 around the house. Yes, a full-format mirrorless, based on Nikon's technology, made by Samsung, that would be close to my dreams!

My recent fling with Sony A7 might be of short duration ... Surely, a Nikon would offer a decent user interface, GPS support, and all the other stuff sorely missing from the A7? It is allowed to harbour hopes at least :D

I like the idea. If it materialises in a FX moronless...eh, mirrorless I'd be thrilled.

Imagine being able to easily eye-focus an f/2.8 lens after the sun has gone down.
I'm for that.

Well, at least you would hope that we would have an autofocusing F mount adapter available, assuming a new mount is used on the mirrorless line.

Buying the technology from Samsung may suggest that the technology will be more widely used.

Samsung makes BSI sensor.  So, Nikon may have asked Samsung to develop a BSI sensor of higher resolution than Sony's 42MP BSI sensor in order to compete with Canon's 50MP cameras (a D810 follower?).

Of course patenting certain technology doesn't mean you plan to actually use it but with patents for FF mirrorless 28-80mm and 19mm PC-E lenses Nikon is definitely working on something, maybe the sourced Samsung tech was the missing link for making the final product.

Careful there mate - Holland is a wet place at the best of times and I still remember the devastation and loss of life caused by the 1953 floods!  ;D  ;D  ;D

There is no doubting that mirrorless cameras with their now well established benefits, economy of manufacture, and maturing technologies  will ultimately overtake and replace the DSLR.  In the last few years it has been the case that the well perfected and refined DSLR technology has held off the raw and still less refined upstart mirrorless technology.  However Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus, Samsung NX, and Nikon's own Nikon 1 System have all shown that the time is fast approaching when mirrorless will reign supreme.  Indeed as sensors are pushed to higher and higher resolutions, the mirrorless format may be the best vehicle for implementing such developments as issues with mirror alignment and AF calibration simply do not arise.  Vale the DSLR.

Yes, I will also await a Nikon FX mirrorless system with great interest.

The news is interesting. The future completely unknown however, they could deliver something fabulous or they could make a dog's breakfast of it.

For me going back to buying into a Nikon system would be as much about Nikon delivering something attractive to me as it is about Nikon changing and becoming more customer-oriented. Overall I am skeptical, mainly about the second
I admit that a well designed mirrorless system with the advantages of Nikon and Samsung would be very attractive and 2-3 years ago I would have jumped in head first.
However changed personal circumstances and poor Nikon strategy has led me to divest from Nikon and change to Fuji, with which I am in general happy.
At this point switching back would make very little sense. I don't think changing again system would improve the quality my photographic output.
If they pull a rabbit out of the hat I will be envious though.

Though I'm tempted to buy more native Sony, Zeiss or Voigtlander FE lenses I'll stick to my plan for now to only buy lenses which can be used on multiple camera platforms.

The Sony a7S is currently the best body for my kind of use but I can totally see myself switching or even mixing camera brands in the near future if they offer unique capabilities I would like to play with.

Sony is currently taking the lead in FF mirrorless, Leica responded with the SL and for 2016 I hope Nikon AND Canon show us what their response will be. It just a matter of time that Fuji will do the same but think 2016 is too early for them to do so as they already have a winner with their current APS-C offering.
Cheers,
Jan Anne

Hmm, I give this rumor just as much likelihood as a recent "rumor" that Nikon was going to buy Pentax...
I suspect Nikon has all the abilities in house (a viewfinder display will probably have to be sourced from elsewhere, but is not a reason to buy a whole division from another company), there is no interesting tech to acquire and they are probably already researching various prototypes in-house. One thing is a prototype, a different matter is to have enough belief in it as a professional product to put it into production and a that is probably not going to happen before they think limitations of lags and resolution of viewfinder displays have been overcome. The Nikon 1 system shows that they understand on sensor PDAF.

-- Looks like Nikonrumors does not believe in it either and provides good arguments.
