Fascinating images, Øivind.

I was also watching but the timing was wrong for Europe this time. I have better hopes for the coming days, including the comet which will become visible in the northern hemisphere in the coming days.

Øivind, these red auroral images are wonderful.

I well remember very red auroras in Southern New Zealand around 1955 (or thereabouts) that were quite visible to the eye.

We got the redest aurora last night that I ever encountered at these latitudes, and it lasted for more than an hour! After some initial captures at my cabin (monthly thread), I walked over to the little local lake with a better view to the north. The red auroras are not easy to spot by eye that lacks red sensitivity at low light, so bring out the camera! These were captured with the 14-30mm @ f/4 with 4-8 sec exposures on the Z8 at ISO 3200. I finally happily walked back down the calm of my road with Capella, Jupiter and the Pleiades keeping me company in a less colorful sky .

Thanks Bruno and Hugh.
I see 1957 listed as a top year, but there were also some storms in late 1955 that came up in a search.

It was not so red anymore, but we got some powerful nice green shapes.
"Container house width a view."

I've loved your recent set of red and the swirling green auroras Øivind.

I noticed you mention CNX in an earlier post.
I always prefered CNX2 to the current free "Nikon" offering, but assumed it was difficult to get it to run any more. Or that it had restrictions (i only need it to work with d500 images)

What's the story?

Thanks Colin, it should read CNX2 (not CNX), which I still use for some of the post-processing of TIF files resulting from stacking. I have no problems running it under Windows 10. For raw files, after I got the Z8, I had to switch from NX-D to NX Studio.

I can well remember how vivid the reds were back then.  There would have been no need for extended exposures to capture the red colours.

Thanks Bruno and Hugh.

Well everybody in the US and Canada and if you are early awake in Europe with a clear sky - get out now with your camera and tripod, the effect of the new massive solar storm is on (Kp= 8.67) !
(And do not trust your eyes to detect the red.)

Sorry to hear.  The Astrospheric forecast did not get through here - also got clouded out.
The Poker Flat Sky cam, which is further north from us had better conditions (saved 30min time lapse):

Thanks Nasos, finally a great shot of the comet here! I am hopeful, waiting for better weather towards the end of the week.

To my joy, some clouds in the south-west mostly dissolved tonight so I got to have a go at Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas. By eye it was only just possible to see the core with 8x20 binocular, while once it got dark enough the tail clearly showed in live view on the Z8. With time more people appeared so it became a little star party. I did both tracked and untracked exposures with 105mm f/2.5 AIS and the 300mm f/4 PF. Here is my early quick processing of a stack of tracked 8sec exposures over 5 min (to not elongate the core too much as it is tracked on the stars) with the 300PF. I am happy to also have caught the forward tail.

An envious shot, Nasos!  Just like the Neowise, it has been cloudy or rainy at night during the night here in Tokyo.   :'(  Thank you for sharing.

This is just breathtaking!  Yes, I can see the front tail.  Congratulations!
