A very new moon over Chena Ridge in Fairbanks today. The irregularities at the edge of the moon is due to shooting though inversion layers.

Another great moon shot Øivind. I actually think that the moon irregularities add to the image :)
Because of the warm white balance it looks like it was shot in a desert :)

Thanks for the comments both of you. Yes those sodium street lights might confuse the perception of snow (I used a slightly modified daylight white balance to avoid that the reds of the late sunset was canceled out). Jakov, I agree that the irregularities on the moon adds something. I  wish I had brought the 300PF with me in addition to the 105/2.5; it would have been nice with a closeup of those "waves" on the moon.

Thanks for the comment Colin. I had a try at Jupiter a couple of nights ago....

A crop of the same; yes five moons in one shot with the 105/2.5 !
NIKON 1 AW1, 600 mm 1/6 s, ISO 1600, probably at effective f/8 or f/11.

Hi Øivind, I have only just caught up with these.
That's some magnification you're working withy there. But this just goes to show that using an apparently "low-spec" camera like the AW1 works fine when thought and care goes into taking the shot.

Excellent to see this level of detail

Thanks for the kind comments John and Colin. Yes, in the case of getting Jupiter details it helps to get as much pixels as possible on the subject. The other major variable is a day with quiet atmospheric conditions.

Nice - impressive amount of detail you got out of that lens. The orientation is different from what a high latitude resident like me is used to; quite refreshing.
I got a blurry view of the moon again today, but decided it was too cloudy.

This is definitely not the best photo but it has a nice detail. I was playing a bit with the then new 300PF when I heard the copter. As it was close to this position, I did not have time to bring shutter speed down and aperture up. So the copter seems to be falling out of the sky.
The detail: the plane towards the bottom on the left side. I only noticed it after using the dehaze function in PP.

Nice new contributions here. I like the calm of your image Fons. Colin, it is always funny with those helicopters falling out of the sky, I am surprised you were able to keep all 3 objects focused. Tom, nice how your moon balances those beautiful sunset colors.

The moon can be used as a source of back-light, but inevitably the face does not show (in this case somewhat past last full moon).
