Does the HK-26 hood fit the AF-S VR 300/2.8G ?

Does the longer HK-26 hood from the AF-S 300/2.8 D II fit the VR I which has the much shorter HK-30 hood meant for only 200 mm? Can anyone give an affirmative answer based on first hand experience.

In some other forums I have had too many maybes and perhapses and it-should's from people that know even less than I do. Nikongear has the most knowledgeable gear people I can think of, so please give me a resounding yes or no.

All of these tele lenses 300mm 2.8  that are about 122mm front size share the same hood/lens interface.

The difference comes when you reverse them...! on most lenses the #long# ones will hit the tripod&lens foot...!

Short answer; Yes you can shoot with it no vignetting.

Thank you very much for your reply Erik. Good news about the fit when actually shooting. One more question, do you remember/know whether the HK-26 fits the 300VR backwards for transport, or does the tripod foot impede this?

As you know the AF-I and AF-S 300/2.8, 200-400/4 and 200/2 lenses all have the same diameter (124mm) and the same attachment size for hoods. So in theory any of the hoods for this group (HK-19, HK-22, HK-26, HK-30, HK-31) can fit any lens in shooting position. Whether they are usable is another question - it's possible some of the longer options may be too long for the 200/2 VR and cause vignetting, and others may not be reversible on some lenses depending on the shape of the hood and lens.

I don't have much info on these hoods - these lenses are well out of my league and I've never handled them. I keep a list of hood specifications (which may eventually turn into a web page on my site), and I just happen to have dimensions for the hood in question: HK-26 is 125mm diameter and 130mm long. Not sure if the diameter is the inner or outer dimension? Maybe you could measure your 300 VR I and figure out if the HK-26 will fit.

By the way, if anyone has dimensions for this and any other hood, please forward them to me.

I'm using HK-19 on my AFS 200/2 and the AFS 300/2.8. The newer and more expensive carbon fibre hood (HK-26 I believe) will also fit either lens.

You do want to use the longest possible hood on such lenses, by the way.

The 400/2.8 and its ilk had extension hoods. The HE-5 fits my 200/2 AIS.

Thanks all for participating. This question is now closed, since I have first hand knowledge about HK-26. The hood indeed does fit the 300VR1 both forward and backward.

And the too-short HK-30 suits better the 200VR2 which has the stupid tin-pan hood HK-31.

Vignetting is not affected in either case -- naturally -- and flare is hopefully better controlled.
