Nikon AF 28-70 3,5/4,5
« on: May 09, 2026, 21:20:50 »
This lens is slowly becoming a favourite of mine. In my quest for small light travel zooms I have been happy with the E 75-150 3,5 and the AF D 80-200 4,5/5,6.

On the midrange, I obtained good results with the kit zooms 28-80 both D and G but they are quite slow on the long side (5,6) and the haptics of the G are far from good (I am manual focusing on my Sony A7II).

I think that the 28-70 was the result of a "pre-kit" conception and was not considered as a cap for the bodies sold with.

I am not saying it is a perfect lens but it has the merits of being really good without closing much on the long end which makes more sense than zooms that necessitate f8 for a good pic.

On the short side quality can be very good but there is some mild "balloon" field curvature that is not frankly reduced by stopping down. However this remark does not mean the quality is bad, quite to the contrary since the lens compares favourably to my 28 2,0 N Auto that also suffers from some field curvature, at least on the Sony sensor. Nothing you would notice on non flat subject or for non infinity landscapes.

Highly recommended.

It's indeed a lovely lens.

With a hybrid aspherical element and a 9-blade aperture this lens is a sleeper. Unfortunately it doesn't AF on Z Series Nikon Cameras. It's compatible back to 1959 if you add rabbit ears. I own two of these. Mine are the AF-D version.

I had to send one back as it had a de-centering problem. These lenses were a kit lens to the Nikon F100.

Dave

A focus motor in the camera is required for auto focus so some Nikon DSLR do not offer AF with this lens.

This is a great combination with a 75 to 150 zoom that you already have. I used this on my Nikon FE and my FA and eventually my F 90 X cameras. The lens is good for shooting into the sun as well as it doesn’t flare badly, but the flare is very controlled and in some cases adds nice touch to the picture. I found it to be better at the short end to mid range of the zoom because at 70 mm it’s not as sharp as a 75 to 150. My 75 to 150 has a dandelion chip in it so it communicates with the newer cameras. I also shot this lens on my D 700 and was very impressed with how sharp it is and what a nice combination with the 75 to 150. You won’t be disappointed regards Gerry.
