Start saving up -- again --
« on: May 09, 2026, 12:26:23 »
Nikon just announced the Nikkor 120-300mm f/2.8 S-Line lens with built-in 1.4X. I have no doubt this new addition to the S-line will improve even the stellar F-mount version. Probably will cost a leg or two?

I'd need a new back or a camera bearer and I'd have to sell my soul to own one.

An admirable lens, no doubt.  I'll take a 100-300mm f/4 with VR if or when it comes.

There is already a Nikkor 100-400mm f4.5Z   VR ... thus your prayers are answered :)

In my opinion, if its a Japanese made lens than it's going to be around $11,500.

Nikon is blowing away the other manufacturers in the tele/telezoom area.

Last week I went shooting kingfishers with some friends, Sony and Canon users. I had to bite my tongue. Friendship is more important than scoring technology points.

Keith wants a lens with the constant aperture throughout the zoom range, I guess?

Slightly off topic, but this is great news; that means more nice previous generation lenses will be available at even more affordable prices!

Being economical (or is it cheap), I have found that one can get a lot of bang for the buck using older generation lenses and cameras.  This is coming from someone who is having fun using older equipment.  For telephoto usage, I am having lots of fun with a Nikon D610 and a Nikon ED AF Nikkor 180mm 1:2.8 and also a manual focus Nikon Nikkor ED 600mm 1:5.6  and when I want/need semi-autofocus, I pair it with a modified Nikon TC-16A 1.6x autofocusing teleconverter.

Maybe it is just me, but I have found a pair of primes covering the zoom range is generally lighter to carry and has better performance.  Of course not quite as convenient (or maybe the solution is carry another camera body.)

Akira: I stand corrected. The 100-400 Nikkor is f/4.5-5.6. My bad. Keith has to continue dreaming (or praying) :)

Sony is rumored to be releasing such a lens. The Nikkor is f4.5-5.6 :)
