I see melted-ice and open water at the bottom of the image and fear that this is another glacier which is receding?
It also looks as if you had a very cold day up there but the photograph was worth it.
Thanks, Ann.The above photo was taken from a helicopter.
The pilot took us to the next glacier, called Berendon Glacier.
He landed on a ledge slightly above the glacier, and this one looks to be in much better shape, but we’re also higher up the mountain.
I did ask about the glacier melting, and the pilot confirmed it has been shrinking.
This area does get a lot of snow every year, which helps, but it’s still not enough to stop the receding.
There is an abandoned copper mine between both glaciers. It did produce a large amount of copper, but weather made it very difficult to operate until an avalanche caused the mine to close. The pilot mentioned efforts to reopen it, but it has been a few years with very little progress.
There is a viewpoint above the Salmon Glacier that can be reached via a road from Hyder, AK, but it was still closed due to snow. I was there on June 1.
This photo is the Berendon Glacier.
PS: When we landed it was sunny and zero wind, a light jacket was sufficient to be comfortable, I was wearing my riding boots which kept me dry as each step sank deep into the snow.
