Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max Camera Options

The advent of Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max is sure to cause groans from a lot of NikonGear readers, but not from me. I find I use my iPhone 11 Pro Max cameras more and more as I get older. And I’m about to trade that in for the iPhone 13 Pro Max with 1 TB memory.

This newest iPhone has sensor-shift image stabilization, new ultra-wide camera with 47% more light that can focus at just 2 cm, essentially a macro mode. Also, a new telephoto camera with 77mm focal length and 3x optical zoom, plus 6x optical zoom.

A new video Cinematic mode now has rack focus, which shoots in Dolby Vision HDR. For video, this allows you to edit depth effect and focus transitions after shooting. The iPhone 13 Pro Max will include ProRes this fall and the ability to shoot, cut, and ship the footage.

The phone continues to have Night Mode as included in earlier iPhones. Portrait Mode can blur the background bokeh and includes six lighting effects to swipe through. Smart HDR now recognizes up to four different people in a scene and optimizes contrast, lighting, and skin tones for each one. And it continues to have Deep Fusion for low-light scenes.

The OLED display has true blacks and is 28% brighter (800 nits up to 1200 nits) The iPhone 13 Pro Max includes a 1 TB option. And 2.5 hours more battery life. Also, 5G.

Camera:

Telephoto, 77 mm, 3x optical zoom, f/2.8 (6 element lens)

Ultra-Wide 13mm, f/1.8 (6 element lens)

Wide 26 mm, f/1.5, 1.9µm pixels (7 element lens)

I have the 12+ and this has some incremental improvements. Probably not enough for me to break my pattern of every other version though. 12+ already has the sensor shift which is nice, and 5g.

I think the post capture rack focus is a bit of a gimmick as it just adds selective blur to images captured with higher depth of field. The example they showed was captured with at f/9 with what appeared to be the wide lens. But adaptive focus during shooting is interesting.

I used to carry my camera everyday. Now I only do when I have something specific I want to photograph and need the capabilities it offers.

How about the DNG files. How useful are they, in your opinion?

Moved to the 12 Mini last year from the XS, love the small size and do like the 13mm ultra wide angle lens but am missing the 56mm tele lens a lot more than I like having the UWA. The complete lack of optical background separation is extremely annoying as it is the complete opposite of what I love about my fast primes on the Z6.

The 13 Pro does sure look tempting with the 13, 26 AND 77mm lenses for a nice 6x optical zoom range plus the 2cm macro and improved low light performance are also very tempting.

Wasn't planning on upgrading after one year but do admit that whatever is left of my photographer heart it dies a little more every time I see images of the "standard" 26mm lens with infinite DOF or crappy digitally zoomed in distant images.
Cheers,
Jan Anne

Interesting choice of focal lengths (FX equivalent): 13mm, 26mm and 77mm.
Personally, 13mm seems too wide, and the 3x gap between 26 and 77 is too big.
Something like 21mm, 40mm and 80mm would do nicely, although that skips the popular 26-28mm focal length.
Actually, an iPhone mini with 26mm and 56mm would be my first choice (currently using iPhone SE II with 26mm only) :)

My old XS had the 28 and 56mm combo which was perfect, I've shot a lot with 14mm lenses on DSLR and mirrorless so the 13mm on the 12 Mini was very welcome and familiar territory but not having a tele lens makes it a weird combo for me personally.

The 13, 26 and 77mm combo should work fine for my style shooting as it comes close to my preferred 14, 35 and 85 or 125mm combo for the Z6.
Cheers,
Jan Anne

I ask again: how are the DNG files on the iPhone, if anyone knows, please.

I rarely edit my phone photos on a computer so haven’t tried this out. If the sun comes out I’ll give it a try this afternoon and post so you can judge. Right now it is a bit gray so not a big challenge for bit depth.

Still have a iPhone X. Will order a iPhone 13 Pro (don't know what size set) tomorrow. Imagine having all these features in a pro body ?

Birna isn't it better to create a dedicated page for people who use cells of different kinds? For different purposes? THX! LZ

I have no complaints about the feature, but wonder if they could have called it something else to differentiate from the existing well used terms of Portrait/Landscape ?

Too late of course...

The last I checked, Apple was not listening to me. :)

I think about the camera features; too many to list.

In the meantime, I ordered a iPhone 13 Maxi Pro with 512 GB.
