Cold spring morning - loon flap
« on: July 24, 2021, 01:58:23 »
This loon was imaged several years ago on a cold April morn.  The loons had just returned to this northern lake, and were settling in for mating and raising a family.

I floated around with them in my little loon boat, glad that I had dressed warmly , as it was 28 degrees when I put the boat in the water.

Nikon D4, 600 VR. f/5.6 1/640s, ISO 1600.  Fill flash with Better Beamer.

Cheers

Randy

Beautiful image, pose and technique. Agree with Fons the almost monochrome quality works very well here too.

Thanks folks:

I thought about converting it to B&W, but then you lose that subtle red in the eye, which is such a essential part of a loon!  May try it anyway.

Cheers

Randy

Any thoughts about the B&W vs color? preferences?

A beautiful photograph, Randy! I agree that the colour may very subtle in your original version but removing it takes away a little of the richness.

Thanks Ian:

I agree, still prefer the original version, but always good to try options.

This image works but it is color version all the way for me.

  Thanks for the option!

I'm a B&W guy but I agree that just that little hint of color improves the image.  Good show!

I agree - the pure B&W looks flatter - much prefer the first one.

Great shot.

The subtle colors are perfect for the color version

Yes, the subtle color retains the atmosphere of the scene better to me.  Nice capture anyway!

Stunning photo of a beautiful bird, I imagine this capture made your day! I too prefer the colour version, the soft subtle colours and gentle light create the perfect atmosphere.
