Immediately after a most enjoyable birthday party, involving a lot of family and friends, Erik and I started on our post-party adventure inland southern Norway.
Seeing the special Norwegian race of flying elks led us to a rapid halt. To paraphrase the well-known saying, “Furthermore, I am of the opinion that Carthage should be destroyedthe AFS 105mm f/1.4 Nikkor E should not be purchased” yet glad I didn't heed the advice :D
-
Great party and great start on the trip ;)

Happy birthday, and enjoy the trip!
I believe that Jakov's repeated statement is actually an antiphrasis...
-
Perhaps we should now call you Fierce Old Bear of the North. ;D
Hope you had a super birthday!
-
Where you thinking of the Carthaginian Empire. I think it was destroyed a couple of millenniums back.
I've heard of flying reindeer? I've never seen one.
Dave who is currently deprived of caffeine.
-
A belated happy birthday. HAve a great time!

Happy birthday from Bonn as well!
-
While Erik explored the cliffs of the Jutulhogget Canyon, I focused (sic) on the wonderful reds of bilberries Vaccinium myrtillus interspersed in the thick warm white mats of Cetraria lichens nearby.
The lens that shall not be named and the Erik-special extension ring again in action.

Happy birthday, Bjørn! I'm enjoying beautifully rich autumn color!
It it a bit too early to enjoy the autumn color here in Tokyo. The weather forecast says that today it will be over 30 degrees Celsius!
-
Happy Birthday!
Keep the photos coming.
-
Gratulerer med dagenBjørn!
-
Grattis! Looks like the weather might be boring :) Could I recomend going up to Røros to catch some of the autmn colors? A short trip to Trøndelag isnt the worst thing one could do while in Norway ;)
-
Not extending to Røros, Børge - We continue now from Alvdal to Folldal, then Rondane (Dørålen), Grimsdalen, and side valleys of Romsdalen.
An unusually 'hot' autumn so far has made less colours than normal this time of the year, but now we have evening and night subzero temperatures and the aspen in particular still might catch fire as it were. No snow yet, but expect snow later today on the mountain peaks.
-
You are having only the tenderloin this time then :) Enjoy!
-
Have a great time gentlemen!
The red leaves image is very nice!
-
Also a happy birthday from Copenhagen. Enjoy the autumn.
-
Congratulations Bjørn! And enjoy the trip, you both.
-
Rondane - Another beautiful day ;)

That is wonderful. The landscape, the photos, the fact that a man can be so young at this age.
And the lens seems to play in the 2/200mm region witouth the weight and the price...

Beautiful photos Erik & Bjørn. Thoroughly enjoying this series.

Another extremely busy yet enjoyable field day with Erik.
We are developing a severe processing lag at present thus bear over with us.
From today, a Spotted Jaguar (or so I believe?) seen at Lesja.
-
Foggy morning, Lesjaleirene.
-
Mountain Birch (Betula 'tortuosa') foliage with hoar frost.
The lens that shall not be mentioned with its dedicated extension a la Erik. As of today, my bank informs me the outstanding invoice on that lens has been paid thus it is now officially mine. Precious.

Mind blowing ice crystals. Amazing colors and details.
I diagnose also a love affair with the D500???
-
... I diagnose also a love affair with the D500???
Not there yet.
-
At last we are officially arrived to Western Norway. Water falls galore despite the current dry (but cold) weather.
-
Veeeeery nice pictures from both tourers.
Btw, that's not a spotty Jaguar bur rather a Swedish tractor ;D
Frank, if Bjørns has a secret D500 affair I can support his mission. That is one hell of a camera.
-
Not there yet.
So what is your favourite body currently? I love the D600 and the D500 in parallel.
Both have their merits. How do the different bodies react to the lens that shall not
be named????
-
Df still reigns supreme. But its charger is left at home on this trip.

High tension reigns - 900 000 V is not for the faint of heart. Fondling your long lenses underneath such a high-powered pylon can create a nasty surprise . (this statement is NOT a joke)

When something like this manifests itself in the middle of nowhere (or rather, on a mountain top), I go into overdrive.

One of my favourites so far has been the hoarfrosty birch leaf. Marvellous!

Great thread! I recognize many sights from my own travels in Norway. One thing I also found quite nice was the semi-circular train track coming out of Åndalsnes. It looks funny from the top of Romsdalseggen, whose very steep ascent from Nebba I remember very well. I did not take a camera up there because I needed a few hours of rest from the camera, but I will not forget the amazing view onto the fjord on one side, and the Trollveggen on the other. A very impressive landscape!

Bjorn, Erik,
Thank you for the eye feast.

Wilderness can be deceptive. Actually the mountain is riddled with tunnels for hydropower production ... Erik is documenting the tunnel port.
Wow, I love this enigmatic and surreal look. Thanks for the explanation.
-
Erik has already posted several versions of the Trollveggen vs power pylons scenery in this thread. I have done this subject many times, but the current trip was my first attempt of using the überlong 1200 mm. I deployed the monster lens atop my big Sachtler ENG2 CF HD and hooked up the D3X to the rig. I immediately ran into depth-of-field issues as the long lens even at f/22-f/32 would not render the pylons and the background cliff-face of Trollveggen in sharp focus simultaneously.
I did two series, one with "foreground" focus, the second with focus moved to the background. Showing here the first sequence to indicate how narrow angle of view the 1200 really delivers even on the FX camera. When I'm done with the current VAT chores, I might get head above the surface and do the second series as well.
On a side note, shutter speeds here ranged from 1/8 to 1/15 sec as the mountain face mostly was in deep shade. This is precisely the situation in which the proper tripod support is critical when such long lenses are brought to bear.
-
Meanwhile, enjoy another
stack stitching (N=46; D5300, 105/1.4E, IR). The mountain Bispen ('The Bishop') has a strategically positioned summer cottage illustrating the [political] concept of a 'Norwegian house'. I have photographed this scene several times earlier, but not in IR as far as I can recall. This deficiency is duly addressed now.

Very nice picture, the one with Norvegian house: colors, composition.
-
Guys, a thread and a trip to take slowly and savor it. Thanks for everything you put on the table.
-
I completed second pass of processing and editing of the NEFs from this trip. Thus about time to show something less 'naturalistic'.
Shooting UV with long lenses in hot autumn weather is an exercise in the manner with which atmospheric turbulence and heat waves degrades image quality. Or does it? The end result tends to take on a painterly appearance entirely absent from the razor-sharp UV images one can get of landscapes under optimal conditions.
Here is a view of Stygghøin and Dørålglupen, a part of Dørålen and Rondane nature preserve. Taken in UV with my UV-only Nikon D3200 and the Reflex-Nikkor 1000 mm f/11 lens. I have modified the revolving filter disc on this lens to let one slot be without any filter at all, thus ensuring the maximum UV transmittance to the camera.
