according to the biggest retailers' websites in Japan :o :o :o
the end of an era...still expensive at 152,000yen ::)
-
Yet another discontinuation - I should consider going for a second (this time black) one.
-
As long as repairs remain possible, the "era" is not finished yet :)
-
I agree with Airy... ;)
-
I'll get another body while Df stocks last :(
-
Done. A new body is ordered. Not planned, but why not? I love the Df.
-
I loved it from the first press pics, the image quality made it even better! My new Z6 might make manual focus easier, but I'll always love the Df.
-
The new Z5 (modified by Italian company PrimaLuce) is growing on me. It will be a versatile system together with the Df. Not in the least as many lenses that excel on the Df also do excellent [IR] service on the modified Z5.
-
i almost bought one but I left my job so it may not be the best idea :o :o :o
i couldnt buy one anymore ::)
the good news is i will start my next job tomorrow.
oh, please. i want to buy a silver Df brand new for christmas (for a great price)
-
Another black Df is currently in transit from Japan to be eagerly awaited by yours truly.
I briefly used the Panda version and decided to go All Blacks instead.
-
from which seller :o :o :o
-
Ebay handle 'mapcamera'. I purchased a lightly used camera, that probably is going to be surprised by the conditions under which it will be deployed in the rough Nordic setting.
I do have a third Df which is carefully reconstructed by Erik 'Dr. Lens' to be a display item as its internal damage simply was to comprehensive to make it operative again. However, it sits prominently on display nad probably will supply spare parts to cover future needs.
-
oh, mapcamera :o :o :o
-
Are they rumoured to be good or bad? Very quick and forthcoming response from the store, by the way.

if its the real shop then their support is good. i knew some of their staff.
most of the staff that were good to me left :o :o :o
if there are troubles i can probably go between for you.
fujiya is my favorite shop for new stuff and yodobashi shinjuku, everyone there knows me.
-
fujiya had them for 152,000JPY, the best price :o :o :o
so sad...
-
Considering even more getting another (this time black) Df copy
-
Really just for reference only, but one of the kakaku sellers has a new one.
https://kakaku.com/item/K0000591533/?lid=pc_ksearch_kakakuitem
However, I don’t think a kakaku listed seller is advisable outside of Japan, as the buying process is funky. I just bought a new D750 body from the ‘Wink’ seller, and it was only when I got it and opened the box that I felt comfortable. But it has a one year Nikon warranty (apparently ...), and I paid for a seven year warranty, including accidental damage.
I recently bought a slew of AI and AIS lenses, all from Japanese eBay sellers. I checked prices at Fujiya and Map first, but nothing caught my eye. Although I technically live in Tokyo, it takes long bus and train rides to get into town, and in Covid days I don’t really want to do that :-( However, I am sure that if (when) I do get to visit the shops I will leave with a heavy little package in my pocket.
-
these are all used :o :o :o
i bought a refurbished one from Nikon via Yodobashi for 114,000JPY with lens (1 year warranty). ::)
the subdial is mulfunctioning tho...
-
Oh, I didn’t know Yoda sells Nikon refurbs. Are they just a flash in the pan, or do they have a special section for them?

Shinjuku, main building 2nd floor and shinjuku KEIO bus terminal building 2nd floor (outlet) :o :o :o
one in kanagawa, too ::)
-
That is great info, thank you.
Can you tell me the Kanagawa branch? I am in the dirty old town of Machida, which skirts Kanagawa.

i dont know unfortunately but i was told that there is another one at kanagawa :o :o :o
refurbs are ex-display cameras, mine came with around 37,000 clicks and STD (subdial tardy display) ::) and scratched exterior.
or old-new-stocks....

That should not be a refurbished one. As you say, those are outlet cameras that have been on display as samples in the shops, touched and fumbled. I don't think any camera brands sell refurbished cameras in Japan.

i was told that mine was, in fact i saw that the screws have scratches meaning it was opened recently. the scratches look recent. they told me that they sent the cameras back to Nikon so I assume it was refurbished :o :o :o
-
I bought a refurbished D5300, and it looked like new, no scratches or anything, in box with papers.
-

To be precise, that should be called "repaired" or "overhauled", not "refurbished".
As Bent says, a refurbished camera should look as good as new.
-
ok, maybe "refreshed". it feels like some of the rubber parts look new :o :o :o
maybe tomorrow i will send to shinjuku to check the STD (subdial tardy display) ::)

Just bought a mint s/h Df with a "silver ring" 50 1.8 in December (arrived in January)... As a D4 owner, I of course love the performance... I was saddened though not surprised at all to hear that the Df was discontinued. I had hoped until a few years ago that a DfII would be forthcoming, but was again saddened, though not surprised, that one never did.
In the few short months I have owned my Df, I have come to love it and have bought two lenses especially for it... one is shown below.
I hope that this camera has a lot of life left in it.
-
Very nice subtle product shot ;)
-
... and very nice product combo too.
-
I bought a new one from a camera store in Toronto. Last one they had. I love it ... the D850 gets very little use these days. For some reason the Df just produces nicer pics. Don't know why ...

Well, my "new" old chrome Df had a shutter count around 160000 when I bought it, and now it's up to 173254, so there's a good chance that your hopes will be rewarded.
My sample came with a leather half case, so the parts of the body that usually get worn out (bottom edge and camera base) are practically perfect. You might want to use one, it works!

Just spotted this on Craigslist in Vancouver. Seems like a screaming deal.

Nice 'Panda'. I went for All Blacks myself, and dropped the fake 'retro' 50mm. Df is for manual lenses.

Well ... don't discount those 50 mm lenses that come with it. They make for some surprisingly good photos and are very light.
-
The lens is OK, I'm not denying that. However, why put a lens on a Df without aperture collar and proper manual focus? I simply do not like using the "G-spot" in front of the Df to set apertures on a lens. Makes the handling awkward. Df is for the hard-core aperture ring enthusiast. Virtually all my manual lenses are CPU-enabled and all my Nikons are set to have aperture control by lens. For those G/E lenses without aperture ring, the camera would fall back to the camera dials so nothing is lost in that setup.
Besides, I hardly needed more 50mm lenses -- thus, the ones following with "kit" Dfs were sold off quickly. I just checked that they worked OK.

.
I lament Nikon's financial woes.
However, my Df is as good a full frame camera as I will ever need. It's no surprise to me that Nikon (and others) are not selling many new digital camera these days, because for many of us, digital cameras became "good enough" for our needs 5 - 10 years ago.
Frankly, for my photography, there's nothing the mirrorless Z cameras can do that I need and can't be done with my Df and 810 bodies.

Agreed. It's a bit like Windows XP Pro or Win 7 Pro. They could have stopped there and not done Win 8.1, Win 10 ... nothing there makes it better.

Of all the Windows version I liked Windows 7 almost instantly and the best. Maybe Microsoft messed with Windows because of tablets and touch screens. Microsoft might have freshened the look a little and added some new technology without all needless reorganizing. Yes but I guess they had to accommodate the touch screens.
I've been using Open Shell to give Windows 10 more of the feel I like...

I'm running out of time. I tried to find the home of Open Shell. Maybe tomorrow.

Openshell:

I'm using the earlier version Classic Shell, which still runs fine.
Lots of garbage included in win 10 which I could do without. I reverted my main work station to Win7 after experiencing too many issues with Win10. The laptops either run win10 or Linux.

Here is Classic Shell...

Perhaps Classic and Open Shell deserve there own discussion?

Indeed, the Df (and others from the same generation, such as D750) leaves the impression that some kind of maturity was reached, and that's bat news for marketing freaks.
I got my Df thoroughly cleaned today, a treatment well deserved after 7 years of common travel, commuting and leisure. The paint is worn off at the angles, never mind. I got my wrinkles too.
While at the shop, I had another look at the Z5. Same overall impression as before : the focussing aids might become useful some time from now, when my eyesight worsens. While I cherish my Df, I also cherish my auld MF lenses and the latter might last longer. My oldest one, a 20/3.5 UD, dates back to 1968 and works fine.
For the time being, I just feel grateful.

I like the look of a camera that is free of dings, dents and scratches but one that has surfaces polished smooth from use. I had a Nikon F2 that was in such condition excepting scratches around the tripod thread. There was brass showing through particularly behind the advance lever.

D850 v. Df? How do those who use the D850 and Df feel about the Df having only 16MP? I know there are those who say the colors of the Df are special. I don't see this perhaps because of the deficiencies of my computers' displays.
Back in the '70s I sold a small Toyota pickup to finance a 135/5.6 Componon-S and 80-200/4.5 Nikkor zoom. I recently sold a Ford F150 pickup. I'm considering a Nikon D500 for it's 1.0x viewfinder hoping I'll be able to make better use of my AI and AIS Nikkors. I still own most as I feel it's unwise to sell a good tool. I wonder if it's time to give up manual focus as my eyes age. I wish I could try a Df but there are no brick and mortar camera stores here in Diddy Wah Diddy which as you may know, Ain't no town and it ain't no city. I used to have open accounts at two camera stores in the suburbs of Los Angeles.
For those who own both a D850 and Df is there a time and place for each?

I have a Df and a shelf of AI/AIS lenses. I also have aging eyes and a DK-17m fitted to the camera. However, for the past two years I’ve been using a Z6 with those same lenses. It took me many weeks to adapt to the Z6, but now I never go back to the Df. Z6 is quite cheap right now.
-
" It took me many weeks to adapt to the Z6." Jack Dahlgren, this is a statement about the Z6 camera and its designers, not you, and it reflects by contrast the intuitive nature of the Df camera and its designers, or a combination of the intuitive learning nature of the Df and the age and photographic experience of Jack Dahlgren, an experienced film era photographer. As such, it explains why so many of us old film guys came instinctively to love the Df and its unforgettable qualities.

I have a D800 and a Df, after having used a D700. Honestly, the lower pixel count does not bother me. That's probably because I'm not into big prints now.
Also, given the fact I'm often using no tripods and high ISO, D800 picture quality would be good after downsampling, in which case it is not better than the Df .

Yes, the Df seemed instantly familiar. However, after a couple of years with the Z6, the Df seems like a foreign beast when I try to get a better look through the viewfinder by pressing a button. There are things not to like about mirrorless cameras, but now the Z6 is the only camera I use other than my phone.

I realize it's an old thread, but I stumbled onto it while researching information about the Df that I recently purchased with a 2,460 shutter count. It truly is the best of two worlds!
It struck me that while everyone was discussing the discontinuation of the Df, it wasn't known at the time that Nikon would soon end research and development of SLR cameras altogether.
https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/12/23204975/nikon-dslr-slr-cameras-stop-report-mirrorless
They neither confirmed nor denied it, but such was the case with the Df as well.
More recently, it appears the D7500 is headed towards the same fate and I don't expect an announcement. It's genuinely disappointing to see the slow death of a beloved format. :(
