Title: Catherine Palace, Pushkin/Russia
Post by: Luc on October 20, 2019, 22:56:55
Images from Catherine Palace, Pushkin/Russia.

It was the summer residence of the Russian tsars. The interior was almost completely destroyed in WWII but is now beautifully reconstructed.
Soviet archivists had managed to document a fair amount of the interior before the war, which proved of great importance in reconstructing the palace.

All Nikon Z6 + Nikkor Z 24-70mm f4 (great travel combo)

In the more splendid rooms indeed porcelain, in others handpainted to perfection. In these rooms the real stuff if I remember correctly.

You are right John, it is Peterhof! That was our next stop after lunch. Thanks for noticing. I guess you've visited it too?

Luc, did you use HDR for interior shots ?
Title: Re: Catherine Palace, Pushkin/Russia

Francis, no HDR was used. Capture One only, which imo results in a visible difference compared to what can be achieved (at least by me) with PS/LR.

Great pictures ! I wonder where mine's (shot with an F4s) are , of course at the time most things were a bit more shabby in Leningrad. Couldn't visit inside though. ;)

The « Blue ornament » is an earthenware stove Kachelofen quite common in some areas of France (Alsace), Germany, Switzerland, Austria.

You did beautifully capture the wealth and taste of the era! My favourite is nr 3 with the reflections. I am amazed by the dynamic range of todays cameras to show both inside and outside. I enjoyed looking at your series.

Interesting, thanks! A heating device makes a lot of sense because these places must have been very cold in Russian winters. Here's a link to the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonry_heater (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonry_heater).

Thanks Peter. Images like these are the reason I returned to Nikon and full frame. It's wonderful indeed what these cameras are capable of. Now more than ever the photographer is the limiting factor :)

Thanks Armando, Jacques, Frank!

Jacques, obviously a huge amount of money is spent on the restoration work. Rightfully so the Russians are very proud of their beautiful palaces, museums and churches. And of course, tourists pay a lot of money to admire them.

Christian, thank you for the details and link.  Some houses in Hokkaido are equipped with Kachelofen, but this one in the Palace looks too different to identify.  :D

We call it "pechika" by borrowing the russian word for it.

I have been using Capture One for some time, and find it really good, particularly with Fuji files.  It also works really well with nefs.
