While looking for images suitable for the wall thread, I stumbled across a few signs and billboards and thought they might be a good start for a thread.
From Prague (2008):

I think the museum of communism is a brilliant design. Nice catch
-
I found a Canon A1 at a thrift store and took it for a spin in Williamstown, Mass. last year.
-
Last week-end in France. One week before the elections and every place has its special billboards. I've made a series.
Which one do you prefer? Why? How could I take the billboards differently?
Perhaps you have your own picture, please share.
Thanks.
-
The two last ones of the series are most telling ...
-
Thank you Bjørn for your reply.
Surprisingly some places were not ready.
-
Nicole, it's funny how they are exhibited in almost the same order on all the billboards :)
Yes, the last two are the best ones :)
-
Nicole, you can combine 1,2,4,5,6,7 and then a bit extra #4 and call that "Only one vote for the right side" ;)
-
Not one of my finer captures with the flash reflection taking it's toll on the image. I didn't check for that at the time, so shame on me. I put a CP 990 on a Stroboframe flip bracket and stuck an SB28 DX flash unit on top to get better flash coverage than the 990's built in birthday candle flash, and yes, that did light things up.
Anyway, this sign was posted in the Mesa, Arizona Senior Center Billiard Room.
-
Nicole, these 2 stand out (to me):
election-nicole-9.jpgl: one for free and a look in the mirror
election-nicole-11.jpg: down the line it goes,- and up the stairs for those
-
Does this count - my images on an exhibition stand at the World travel Expo
-
Thanks Jakov, Werner and Thomas for your selection and comments.
The candidates are always in the same order. I don't how this order is defined.
The billboards have 12 places for posters but there are only 11 candidates ;)
-
Nice work, Elsa!

Thank you Carl.

I've made a series.
Which one do you prefer? Why?
The shot with the cars in the foreground is my favorite. It places the "important" electioneering in an everyday, mundane, even slightly 'dirty', side-of-the-road context

Is Kodak the company that makes a knockoff of Pace® Picante Sauce in Rochester, New York?
-
It hails from Rochester, yes. Not sure about the pizza sauce but the colours match?
-
I heard few years ago that some of the Kodak buildings were being used to process food. Also that "skins" for smart phones were made there. Kodak should be the No. 1 maker of digital image sensors. I think the food product was some kind of tomato sauce. This was probably a YouTube video that originated from the Discovery Channel group.

The outmost village of Lofoten has the shortest location name possible. Å. Nothing more yet loaded with meaning (the name 'Å' usually means a slow-flowing river winding to the sea; alternatively, a small river). No wonder the sign is a popular subject for all the tourists flooding Lofoten these days. Even photographers cannot avoid the temptation I'm afraid. Bu we rarely steal the signs ...

This is from the Messel pit (Wikipedia link) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messel_pit).
In ancient time it was a vulcanic lake.
Since 1859 it was used to mine bitumious shale which contained a high number of fossiles.
Fuel and other oil derivates were refined from it and economic use ruled until the 1970s.
There were stability issues considering the steep rim and and it was supposed to become a landfill, but protests rised.

Finally the Hessian state bought it and transitioned it into a scientific place. It became a UNESCO worl heritage site in 1995.

Some other funny design on a work fence for our middle age museum in Paris ;)
-
Jacques, the design looks indeed intriguing. Is this archangel (?) engraved?
Correction: the angel itself seems to be a woodcarving and screwed onto the wall.
-
Hi Akira, the angel is a flat 2D picture (a quality one), while the workers are hand drawn, the whole thing is screwed to the fence... :)
I'll show some others in a few days, as the wooden fence itself is an allusion to the museum as most fences today (for works) are metallic !
It's like a comic strip all along the fence showing some of the artifacts we have in that museum that sits in the Roman Thermes of Lutèce (Paris in Roman times) plus some late additions circa 1200 AD. Today there is a great refurbishment of the whole museum, opening rooms under the Boulevard St Michel and playing with a small middle-age garden and a chapel, thus the need for a high fence... :o

I definitely believe the Panamanians - many tourists have been eaten in Australia over the years by Australian saltwater crocodiles.
With these critters anyone either entering the water, or even standing near the waters's edge, are in effect joining the crocs food chain.

Thanks Keith. This was shot more than 10 years ago :) I wonder how the place looks today. I remember I noticed the man in the last moment before he walked away from the missing letter A so I did not have enough time to zoom. That was why the picture is heavily cropped. He made a second round around the stadium, but eventually stopped before the billboard and sat down on the grass :)

There is a Marx Brothers movie (Love Happy, 1949), where Harpo escapes some villains chasing him atop the 4-position neon sign... One of the villains was Raymond Burr (later Chief Ironside in the famous TV series).
Not their best movie, but if for historical reasons you want to see Marylin Monroe's first movie scene, this is the one to watch...

Thanks, Massimo, good info! I am a huge Marx Brother's fan, although I haven't seen one of their movies in years. That scene with Harpo seems to trigger my memory, but it was so long ago, and my memory isn't what it was. I will try to find Love Happy and enjoy it again.
As for Raymond Burr, he had an even more famous role as Perry Mason, but, I did not know about that being Marylin Monroe's first movie. Or, if I ever did know, it's long forgotten.

They do at times, however, get their revenge!
-
Hans, this is so sadly true - as per the graphic images that you have captured on the signs.
A workmate of my daughters got killed on the way to work in Melbourne only about 18 months ago when a hundred year old elm dropped on her. She left a husband and two children; she was a leading researcher in her field and was only about 40 years old. What a waste.
The somewhat green local council had inspected the tree only a few weeks prior and gave it a clean bill of health.....
*********************
The second image well sums up what eucalypts do - especially if they are under heat or drought stress. Many Australians have been killed by falling branches and trees toppling. Better to forgo the shade.
They do at times, however, get their revenge!

The signs about the dangers of falling trees and their branches most certainly mean what they say (Hans_S, Reply # 273).
Today an elderley couple were killed not very far from where I live when a tree fell on their ultility vehicle.
Link: https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/two-killed-by-falling-tree-south-east-of-melbourne-20210910-p58qj6.html
At the end of the link, there is a list of people that have been killed or badly injured by trees in recent times; one was killed by an elm tree as she walked to work - she was a close friend and professional colleague of my daughter.
In just my state of 6.7 million people, there have been 14 tree and tree branch incidents causing 15 deaths and 10 hospitalisations in the last two years - somewhat higher than the official rate of a 1 in 5.4 million chance of being killed by a tree. Sadly there are many other examples from the other states in Australia.
A bit off topic I must confess, but the signs should be taken seriously.

Sure looks like 777 but is 666 in Arabic--6 is ٦, 7 is ٧, according to Wikipedia. Was beside an elevator door in a hotel in Luxor. The American and European tourists seemed fairly amused by it. This type of sign used to be much more common in Japan, before the days of the internet and navigation aids. I have never been sure about their actual purpose though. Any attempt to actually navigate from them soon ends in confusion!
I regard them as a kind of totem, with all the local businesses represented.

Maybe deliberate - "I take care of a dog" is information - "Beware of the dog" is a warning - they are different in law here in the UK - maybe also in Spain?

Interestingly, according to Wiki, the flower is called "Chounosuke-sou" in Japan. The species was first collected by Chounosuke Sugawa, assistant of the Russian botanist Carl Johann Maximovicz. "Sou" means "plant" and is the common tag to add the Japanese names of plants.
