April 2. Today I tested a used Fuji XF 55-200 I'm considering buying. In the local church I tested the OIS in available light with some handheld shots at the long end... and one at the shorter end.
First one shot through an iron gate handheld at 200mm and 1/30s. All out of camera JPG's corrected in C1.

I think that's not only a matter of sensor, but two also the translation - logarithm to jpg and, more important, the lens used. When I use high resolution lenses like the Nikkor 80/2.8 or the Voigtlanders 58/1.4 and 90/3.5 they deliver a very nice reflection in Gold and Metal (like in cars) as well.

Thanks Frank and John,
I'm not a techie wrt. lenses and sensors but my own suggestion would be that it could be a combination of both. (According to Fuji) the lack of AA filter and their color array improves resolving power of the sensor - in combination with their lenses it could be the explanation. In other situations I find this combination can become a bit "insisting in detail". But interesting point - next time I'm going to the church I'll try to remember one of my Minolta lenses and take a similar shot just for comparison.
I like your light, Lars.
Thanks Bruno - I really like flower shots taken with the Heligons and yours are no exception!

April 3d. Not quite the last time zone of the day (UT-8, but currently UT-7 with daylight saving). One of those superb Spring days we get in Seattle to remind us that it won't really stop raining until July. My first is a blue heron, one of the colony returning to the Ballard Locks for summer and busy today fetching sticks to patch last year's nests. (Cropped from a D-810 frame; 300 mm f/4 AFS). The second is Japanese maple hovering above tulips (55 mm f/3.5). The D-810 is only recently purchased. A magical camera and contrary to internet pronouncements not at all hostile to old MF lenses. The 55/3.5 produces photos of astonishing clarity.
Cheers, John (with a few minutes to go before midnight)

More flowers
-
where do you find all these floral specimens?
In the garden which is a former small pasture with a stream. We keep 70% wild and encourage biodiversity by preserving all plants that are coming back and by planting indigenous species and taking care of insects food chain. For example, Corydalis is a natural station while Fritillaria is a reintroduction from locally sourced plants. We now have 3 or 4 times more plants and insects than 13 years ago when we moved in.
-
Bruno. That is cool. Do you also work with Myceluim? Mushrooms are tge base for many other species.
Reigning the decay path they recycle lots of nutrients from anything and are themselves nutritious to other species.
Du you have mushrooms or Mycelia to show?
-
I keep several log piles as refuge for toads and Zootoca vivipara, a lizard living in damp areas. They are slowly rotting and are full of mushrooms. Chemicals are also banned from the garden so we regularly have mushrooms popping here and there. I have pics in the archive but they would not fit this thread. I'll have a look later today, when rain stops.
-
I ask esp because I just read the book "Mycelium Running" by Paul Stanmets who also wrote a book about growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms and is regarded as one of the leading experts in decontamination of sites using mushrooms. The book contains a lot of information although it is quite entagled and structurally confusing like Mycelium sometimes is:

Are some of these edible?
I don't know but I remember that most of the mushrooms growing on wood, even when edible, are rather hard and not really good.
-
Good Stuff John of the reopening. Bruno, I love your gardening methodology. I only have a yard, but no poisons, compost everything and use vermiculture for food waste. Unforyunately, it so dry here that mushroom growth is only in winter (our wet months).

Looking back in the middle through the back window.
Dark shadow: middle back seat headrest.

Rectengular window shapes: somewhat west looking windows of the washing plant door system.

7/Apr/2016 -- Today I decided to sport something longer. With the Ai-S 200/f=4.0 Micro I took architectural details, some spring flowers and a surprising detail.
Color response / fidelity of this lens is amazing in good light. Mixed light situations are really, really bad: yellow cast, magenta cast, blue cast or all together. Rule: use it in daylight or other full spectrum light for wolderful colors but avoid indoor mixed light!

John I love the lighting & presentation. Do you have details on how they "sanieren de Bodem"?
The whole city is heavy soil polluted. One reason is the textile-industry using chemicals, especially after WW I. Another reason is the train-maintenance site, which has been active in the middle of the city since 1863, all coal and diesel Locs were on the site in maintenance since that time. As there was no law regarding soil pollution, the old diesel and oil just went into the sand. They had to wait till it all was absorbed.
Another pollution source nearby was a gas-turbine factory which used all kind of fuel to heat the city. All added up, the problems are enormous, and keeping the stuff non-movable is one of the main policies.
In this case, as houses will be built there, the heavy polluted soil will be transported the to a chemical destruction plant. The lighter pollution will be placed on observation on special piles, till the test will reveal it can be used, or needs to be destructed too.
The new building site is behind the old wagon ;)

Well it's a test for the limits ;) Actually I prefer the wide open; the transition between sharp and unsharp on that very delicate bloompedals is perfectly done and creates the 'dreamery-effect' where I am looking for. A glimpse of the sun
Reminds me of a Robert Frost Poem A Passing Glimpse
I often see flowers from a passing car
That are gone before I can tell what they are.
I want to get out of the train and go back
To see what they were beside the track.
I name all the flowers I am sure they weren't;
Not fireweed loving where woods have burnt--
Not bluebells gracing a tunnel mouth--
Not lupine living on sand and drouth.
Was something brushed across my mind
That no one on earth will ever find?
Heaven gives it glimpses only to those
Not in position to look too close.

Just dropping in here, enjoying the photographs and all. Fons, I took the liberty of saving both images to my desktop and comparing them. By the looks of it the profile you used to correct the rectilinear distortion on the image made things worse. The PN converted JPG looks a lot better. I think something might be wrong with the correction profile used, at least at the 17mm end of the lens. With the correction applied the image almost looks like it was taken with a full frame fish eye rather then a rectilinear corrected wide angle.
There is some distortion with the 17-35mm, and it is a lot more compared to the 14-24 which I owned and used extensively for some years, but looking back I still wish I had bought a 17-35mm back then instead of the 14-24.
-
Exactly my point ps automatic profile makes matters worse at least on the wide end of the 17-35,
question may be how to deal with this type of barrel, moustache distortion with wide end lenses.
-
Moustache is a pain. I can only think of trying to correct that in photoshop. With my limited knowledge that would mean individual correction for each photo taken.
Barrel distortion should not be that difficult to fix though, but I would try to deal with that manually in Lightroom and set up my own correction presets there including the rectilinear corrections. Especially after seeing the results you got from the downloaded profile.
The reason I mention lightroom is because that is the software I use for most of my editing. I have no experience with Photo Ninja, Nikon NX and only had a brief encounter with DXO. I do think that each of these programs will let you do the corrections manually and when done you can save the settings to a preset file of sorts
I can very well imagine that it will be nescessary to set up different presets for different focal lengths because the amount of distortion differs so greatly within the zoom range of the 17-35.
I mostly use primes, and with the selection of primes I own there is little need for extensive rectilinear correction. Vignette correction on some. The only lens where I really need rectilinear corrections is the 55mm f1,2 Nikkor-S.C which displays quite severe barrel distortion

This is something I so often wanted to find the discipline for. Most of the time I even carry a camera with me. Will see if I find something noteworty today then :)
For me in the beginning I though: impossible
Then I started to go back, open the door, get one of my many canmeras and lenses and .... voilà: did it.
On some days my pictures suck. But I do not give up.
The rules are: you do not have to do it every day. BUT: IF you do it every day you will become a better photographer no matter where you start.
I guess I missed two days since the year started on 1/1/16 ... a little secret ... on lazy days I take the X100T ... on days I do not want to take a shot ;;;; I might take my phone.
discipline?
No. I just believe in the method: training, training, training ... and not being afraid of taking bad shots sometimes.
-
True, but it takes some practice to frame things right. Wish I had a flash with me in this shot to light up the car from the far right outside the frame
Beautifull Blue.
Yes, a daily picture is a challenge. In my experience, and I shoot daily a lot, it's the selection of the photo, the framing, and the whole post-processing which are rather difficult. Many, many times I looked back, and saw a lot of things that should have been different, and better. If I had a day extra time to take some distance. But that's also part of the fun and a learning process.
Apart from the joy to see the great photo's of others who are contributing here, and face of course the same problems ;)

John: You have (#338) a talent for moments in life, in work, deep in reality .... you often show things many would not take notice of ... Why? beacause you feel these things have to be shown and noone normally takes the effort to show them.
Has anyone had a look at my profile in Flickr, ever?

Hi Akira. Nice shot. Is this a bike lane or a small street???

Thanks, Frank. This is a one-way street which is just wide enough for a LKW. There is another one-way street for the opposite direction on the other side of the railway.

Thanks Frank.
Nice shot Akira.

Free entrance in De Pont Museum, when a new exposition opens. Usually boring stuff, artsy fartsy, and with the 'Usual Suspects' but always good to see developments in one of the best museums in the World.

I can seize any moment of choice now. Action cam purchased today. D500 / 85mm f=1.8 ... dream team.
-
Nice Frank, congratulations on the purchase of the D500. Must be a joy to use.
Another one from De Pont Museum; this is a element of the regular collection ;)
-
John, thanks. Interesting snapshots.
Frank, how do you feel the shutter response of D500 compared to that of D3? I would have to wait for the numeric comparison until imaging-resources will post their review.
-
The difference, Akira, is in the AF. I did not measure anything but the AF feeeels 5 times faster and so that
part of shutter response is marginal. If one switches AF off and Mode=M with t=1/1000 s the D3 is nearly as fast
as the D500 but much noisier. I hope this is the answer you were looking for.

Thanks, Frank. The AF speed is indeed an essential factor for freezing the motion at will. I'm interested if Nikon's decision for the design of the shutter, because they went for the silence and less vibration when replaced D800 with D810 and chose to sacrifice the shutter response.

As the calendar now shows May 1st, I'm closing the April thread and open a new for May.
