Since it is short daylight hours in the Pacific NW, I am interested to practice long exposures around town. I am a novice catching moving traffic, but it is fun to practice timing with the cars and trucks. Please share your long exposures, whatever the subject.
-
This is a test image from the Nikon D3 era where I wanted to see whether the internal time tick counter was 16-bit and thus would overflow after 109 minutes. It did. The exposure was 5 hours by the way. I started in the middle of the winter night and returned at dawn to stop the camera exposure as the first sun rays found their way into the dark conifer forest.
Nikon D3, Fisheye-Nikkor 8 mm f/2.8 AI, 200 ISO.
-
That is just awesome. I can only imagine the difficulty in obtaining such nice composition with that 8mm.
-
This one's a long-ish exposure - 2 seconds. ;D
-
Please share your long exposures, whatever the subject.
It depends of minimum time is required to be qualified of ''long exposure''? :P
Beyond second or minute ? (I don't think there are so many shots beyond hours like Bjørn's one)
-
This is the result of my very first trial of light composite function of Olympus E-M5 Mk II. I forgot the total exposure time (exif seems to record only the basic exposure time), maybe somewhere between 30-60sec.
The function is very handy, because I can approximate the reasonable amount of exposure by watching the LCD. The stars are trailed a bit, which helped the clearer rendering of the constellation of Orion.
I'm glad to know that this method effectively eliminates the very heavy light pollution of Tokyo.
-
Francis, I encourage everyone to reach his or her own definition of long exposure. Liberal interpretation is encouraged. For example, I considered this to be a long exposure relative to my subject :)
-
I foresee great images to be posted here given the ones posted already.
I agree with the definition too, someone once said that time is relative :D
Shot in Slovenia in June this year during the birth of NG Revival!
-
This is from my very first night shooting 8) and about
the 5th or 6th picture I took that night.
And almost in the Pacific NW: Kalispell, May 1996,
with my then new SLR, a Nikon N70 with AF Nikkor 35-80 / 4 - 5.6 D and Kodak CG 100-4.
An interesting effect comes by the street lamp running with 60Hz, giving a light similar to a multi flash freezing some of the motion blur.
A similar effect seems to be visible in your first picture, light going on and off, maybe from some LED-lights, which often run at a frequency of ?? 24Hz?? (you have that with most of the red LED backlights of cars here in Europe).
-
Great idea!
-
Here is an opposite approach to my #6.
-

Got it, Chip ! ;)
-
Sometimes a slightly longer exposure than might have otherwise been called for actually helps the image. Adding a little complimentary blur around it seems to accentuate the motion obtained from that longer exposure. Some simple street vendor scene examples + one track

This is a slow-moving tour boat on the Saône River in Lyon.
-
William, the photo is great, I like the texture in the river and the incredibly straight line of the boat. I have to do similar and get on a canal with a boat :)
Anirban, wonderful chaos you always show in your photos but with order in place. I have to try to do similar and get on a bridge above a highway :)
Øivind, you always surprise me pleasantly :) That looks cold, and no, I don't want to try it :)
Mongo, the athletics shot is great, it takes super skills to catch them so sharp at such speeds up close.
I am afraid that this is going to be one of those threads where I cannot keep up and comment on all the brilliant photos posted :)

A classic 2.5 sec. treatment of a forest from today.
Mongo has never heard of the classic 2.5 second forest treatment but it is a beautiful image. The colour is fabulous and the texture looks like falling silk fabric
Oivind and William - very much like your classic night city images. Reminds Mongo of this one in Shinjuku, Japan (D800e, Nikkor 20mm AI-s f3.5 @f8, 2secs.)

This was an accident because I did not reset ISO to 1600 when I came into the darker environment. I like it still because the atmosphere is nicely captured.

I really like this photo. These kind of scenes I miss most often and simply drive by or walk past them. Classic example of "photo opportunities everywhere".

No. The information presented was for the overall exposure. Does this mean a single exposure?

Yes, I thought it was a single exposure, but the birch tree on the above right suggests it may not....

I think this is the longest exposure, just under 32 seconds, from a movement series I completed recently.

Thomas, your image inspired me to dig out an old one from 2010.
This was taken during the Norwegian Scavenger Tour.
El Presidente, Aleksandra, Erik and I embarked on a long journey from Bergen to Denmark.
Enthusiasts as we were back then, Erik and I mounted our cameras on a tripod thinking how the ship was so big that it would glide on the surface of the sea :)
Needless to say that I froze my body parts in the process...

Nordic colors to my liking. Light traces wrapped as the filaments in a strong rope. Very nautical.
Bringing layers of warm clothing evidently seems a good idea onboard a ship in the northern Atlantik ::)
I usually hesitate to print or post images with star-o-glyphs. Nice to see you posting anyway.
May need to rethink my understanding of what is not ok and what is.
Just getting patient enough to collect sufficient light traces I took the signature of a passed by fishing vessel.
Heavy cropping allows a closer look at the full set of navigational lights which can be seperated from the 2 very bright fishing net beams.

13 seconds of the view from the bridge.
[MS Quest] (https://flic.kr/p/CpERqb)
I like the laser sword light beam and come revisiting the image.
Strong setting, I think because of the off set 'laser' beam nailing the eye of the spectator.
On the second view it's not really sure if the beam is going off the ship or coming down on it 8)

Hyperdrive:
D300 + 18-105VR.
10 Sec exposure. About 8 sec or so was to burn in the tree into the image at 18mm or so, and the last couple of seconds to make the light trails, zoomed in(but can't remember how far).
So the 18mm focal length isn't entirely accurate.

A summer night on the Skagerrak coastline of southern Norway. I guess this was at the darkest time of the night around 0200 (2AM for those using 12-hour time).
The tidal pool with its Enteromorpha algae was captured on film (so yes, it's an old take) with an F4 and the 28 mm f/3.5 PC-nikkor Tilt/shift. No EXIF on film of course, but likely this was ISO 100 film, f/22, and around 30 secs.

Thanks Bjørn. She's quite patient when I'm fooling around with the camera or when I find a good bar with a good selection of beers :)
Hilariously, some street salesmen tried to sell me a "tripod" instead of the big rock I believe I used for the shot. If lucky, the tripods might not crash under the load of a P&S camera.
-
I wager a bet that their tripod carried the "Professional" designation :D
-
Jørgen. I love the bus without a bus. Very much so. I feel sometimes patience pays of in long exposures.
Some luck is also required.
-
Bjørn: I do not recall and I don't have any images of them either, but I wouldn't be surprised. I seem to vaguely recall something about "improve your photos" or similar.
Ps. I remember seeing and being very impressed with your fisheye image (first page) many years ago, either on your own site or on the old NG site. It still impresses me. As do many other images posted in this thread.
Frank: Thanks. Fortunately there were plenty of busses to passing by there.

Some NG members claim UV cannot make 'artistic' pictures. As any other attempt of making a limited domain for creative expressions by setting fixed rules, it fails.

Nice topic and some very nice contributions.
On this hiking trip I was going as lightweight as you can go with the D3s and only carried the 16/3.5 fisheye and 50/1.2. Exposure is 30 seconds because I forgot to bring a remote, I never understood why the cameras have this silly limit. But with a clean ISO4000 and a headlight to paint the cave and foreground I could bag a nice memory of that special evening of sleeping in the cave (an inside image was posted in the moon topic).

Can't match hours or minutes. Great images in this thread. One of mine from Vienna.
-
Is this visible light? How many stops will this filter require and is there any color cast when you use it?
It's UV and the filter factor is around 12 stops if memory serves. The image is directly digitised from the film original with no change in colour.
-
I just have to accept and not try to understand the rendition of color in UV pictures :)
-
There is a difference between film and digital in terms of colour rendition .... Film might render UV blue[-ish], digital usually red (before any colour balancing).
-
Thank you for the explenation Bjørn!

Hasselblad XPan, 45 mm lens (digital reconstruction of severely underexposed negative as the flawed implementation of 'B' for this camera only allowed 8 sec exposure and I needed 10 minutes. The film was scanned 64 times with 16X oversampling and scans averaged)
-
Excellent results for the digital reconstruction Bjørn
-
The design flaw made by Hasselblad (or to be fair, probably their Japanese partners in the XPan project) cost me a lot of annoying and unnecessary efforts and lead me eventually to abandon the camera system.
However, if 8 secs exposures were sufficient, good results could be achieved. In this case, the main challenge was keeping up the stamina to wait for a car on this desolate and very lightly trafficked winter road ... The intervals could be 20 to 30 minutes and I had only a single chance per passing car for the composition I had envisioned.
