Title: January 2026!
Post by: Akira on January 01, 2026, 00:03:23
Happy New Year, folks!  As a Far East dweller, I'd like to take the privilege of starting this first thread of the New Year.  Wish a prospective and peaceful year to you all.

Post your "blog" contributions here.  No theme (other than what the passage of time creates), no contest implied, a maximum of one picture per day in the actual month for NG Supporters and no more than 8 images per month for NG members.  (since it's the last month of the year 2025, every member can post one picture daily).

Enjoy!

A complete white-out outside at present. Very strong winds and subzero temperatures are non-conducive drivers for asthmatics like myself to venture outside without a heat mask. Still, subjects can be seen anywhere.

Approx. 15cm deep snow at present, but since it isn't packed densely, skiing is fraught with difficulties. A little more of snow and there will be at least some prepared tracks for the skiing fans.

At last we got a semblance of winter in my neighbourhood :)  I can do without the cold they currently experience deeper inland, though. Temperatures there fall below -35C at present.  That's way beyond my comfort zone, even with a heat exchanger mask.

Calm, intensely cold weather, plenty of hexagonal ice crystals in the air, clear skies, very low sun, high latitude => perfect conditions for development of parhelia ('sun dogs') and other refractive atmospherical phenomena.

I snapped this on my return from the dentist's. The narrow angle of the 40mm Nikkor meant I only got one out of two sun dogs in this frame. This is the right hand side dog.

I retuned with the very wide Viltrox 9mm f/2.8; too  wide to give the 'sun dogs' full impact size-wise, but better allowed to see them as a landscape element.

The left-hand side dog is barely visible behind the forest line, but its right hand companion shines brightly. A reminder to keep dust off the front of my wide angles, though :) I did shoot with the 9mm stopped all the way down to render reflections in the car more visible and of course this is to invite the presence of unwanted flare specks and dust on the sensor. My bad.

Here we call them "Vinagrillo" because of their vinegar taste; we are used to them, they are part of the landscape, the flowers open with the sun.

Currently we're experiencing Arctic colds, with ambient temperatures dropping below -20C. Way too cold for my taste, even with a heat mask.

However, we are greeted with the most beautiful delicate pink sky colours at dawn. Makes for a nice contrast to the deep-frozen snow.

I can confirm the low temperatures in southeast Norway at the moment. The low winter sun provides beautiful photographic light almost all day, along with wonderful blue tones and atmospheres.

The residents on the west side of the lake do not get any sun after 10:00 a.m. in the winter, while they look out over the rest of the city of Lillehammer basking in sunlight until sunset.

Thanks, Bent. Yes, the sun problem is local. The hills on the western side of the lake Mjøsa is a bit steeper in the northern end than in the Gjøvik area. Therefore they only have morning sun in the winter. However, the main part of Lillehammer have very good sun conditions.

I took this photo of Joseph Weizenbaum a while ago, when I met him in Berlin. Who is? https://www.weizenbaum-institut.de/en/institute/our-guiding-principles/about-joseph-weizenbaum/ (https://www.weizenbaum-institut.de/en/institute/our-guiding-principles/about-joseph-weizenbaum/)

Tech: FM-2n with 1.4/50mm Ai and Fuji Velvia 100, scanned with the Nikon D600; 3.5/55 Nippon Kogaku Japan Micro-NIKKOR; and old Bellows Nikon Film scanner contraption.

Why do I post it?

We live indeed on different planets (?)

The conifers around here are unhappy about being weighted down by thick coats of frozen snow. I can understand their feelings.
I like that photo of the German-Jewish genius, his enigmatic and observant gaze.

Frank, a gorgeous portrait, no matter the convoluted technique used.
John and Arturo, two great shots and two very different painters, if you look at the background. The Rokkor (wide open I guess) uses a squirrel quill while the other one (which lens?) an airbrush.

I did not know about the Canon FP when I had Canon cameras in 1978-79.  Later I had meterless Nikon F's and F2's and liked them much.  I got pretty good a guessing the correct...or nearly correct...exposure for Kodachrome 25.

Hello. The Canon FP was manufactured from 1964 to 1966; it's similar to the FX, but without a light meter. I still shoot with the Nikon F2 and other old film cameras.

That's right, Paco, it's a spectacular design. I saw it on the street today; it belongs to a luxury Jaguar model.

Hi Juan. I don't know much about cars, but I think the car and the logo are authentic to the brand, probably American-made.

I have been using fountain pens for a while now. This is a Majohn P139, nib size #8 just replaced with an "F" that suits better my needs.

  Z50II @3200 iso -not too shabby- , 55mm 3.5 pre-ai

A nice Photo and a fantastic pen. I loved it, but lost it.

No - most definitely not American!

Was originally an Iconic British marque, but along with Land Rover it is now part of an Indian concern -  part of the Tata Motors conglomerate, since 2008 when it was off-loaded by Ford.

Nice grab of the Jaguar ornament, BTW.

Snow sparks and shadows

This is truly a beautifully captured sculpture created by the nature.

Thanks Akira, glad you like it. This picture shows the effect of what a weather report described as “Polar Vortex mayhem”. Last weekend we had sixteen inches of snow followed by unrelentingly cold temperatures, which kept the snowpack intact. It was the biggest snowfall in this part of Connecticut in ten years. Oh, did I mention we live on an approximate latitude with Barcelona and Rome?

They most certainly do look wild and dangerous!

John, what software are you using with your Coolscan 4000?

You've posted several close-ups over recent months Arturo
For me this is one of the best

The colour appeals to me more than your one of the issidae, and I like the waves of gentle blur alongside the small area of sharp detail
