Members might have seen that the 40mm f/2 Nikkor has captured my attention of late, and then for IR which it does in an excellent manner. However, what about general performance for ordinary photography? Nikon does not specfify the lens as top-of-the-line 'S', and the MTF curve bears this out. However we tend to take few photos by an MTF curve alone, so more practical avenues have to be pursued.
I usually start by checking performance up close, since I frequently shoot suchlike scenes. Thre 40mm has a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.17 or 1:5.9X. Thus close but no cigar, to follow that metaphor. It is obviously not a flat field design, as might be predicted form its design, and there is some mild astigmatism to the outer part of the frame as well for close-ups. However, colour aberrations are pretty well kept under control, so in a pinch, one can get a decent close-up with the 40mm.
(I now realise this image also is an RGB example :) )

Soft corners as well, but makes a neat and convenient kit with the Zf! BTW Packing for travelling?

Yes, but will be using the 40mm + Z5 + [IR | black-and-white] combination. I'm going north to do a lecture on aquatic plants, plus spend some days in the herbarium of NTNU, Trondheim, researching for a scientific paper I'm working on right now.

I did this hand-held with the 400/4.5 Nikkor Z on my Zf at 1/20 sec or so. He was moving fast thus sharpness isn't perfect. Oh well. That is a bourgeois concept any way.

A nicely round rendition for the portrait of a person you can be proud of. The earbuds (earplugs) are essential in loud environments. I would never leave home without them to visit rock concerts. In emergency circumstances, a piece of tissue does the job admirably.

Snowing again -- what a surprise :(
A small section of today's panorama made by stitching 14 frames by the Rodenstock TV-Heligon 50mm f/0.75 on the Z30. I did the shots hand-held so alignment is a little hit and miss, but with an improved technique, I reckon huge panoramas can be made in this manner.

I repeated my stitching project with the TV-Heligon and this time made sure all frames were better aligned. Final quality was visibly improved now. However, as the captures still were made by hand-held camera, there is even more room for improvement.

Another oldie on my Zf, here the Voigtländer 21mm f/4 Skopar in Nikon S mount, from about 2005. It's a nice lens and tiny by modern standard. The main drawback is near limit only being 0.9m, which was standard for the rangefinder lenses in their time.

not used very often ?
Not in Winter Times. It was built in 1979 for a Federal Garden Exhibition and it would be great if it was used more ofter.
-
Lovely depth, Tom.
Thanks John. I am glad the lens, the 85mm 1.2 S, was on my camera. Considering my capabilities, it makes my photos look better than I might otherwise accomplish!

Thomas, indeed one of my granddaughters, she's called Puck and will be 10 in 4 weeks. Crazy about horses here she is going for a test, to qualify for higher levels of training! Thanks!
-
You have a gorgeous family Fons. I hope she passes the test!

When the river levels rise, better watch where you park your Bentley!

On Saturday, I went to Sweden to visit some small waterfalls to experiment with long exposures. This one is exposed for 120s:

Nice one Tim, it brings back memories of the 2 weeks I spent there in a rondavel back in 1978. Here's the sunrise from my hotel room in Durban before I shifted north...

Thanks Hans. Lovely colours and calm mood, with the usual ships waiting to enter the harbour.

Thank you Akira...at the time the colours and the silence made it feel like an end-of-the world scenario.

It is a lovely moment. Given my luck with deer on the road this week, I'm glad that I do not have to worry about moose.

you should inform our ice sculpture specialist Øivind Tøien to take pictures in Bankok :D
-
Thanks for the comment Ian, there are two of them now still hanging around. Hope you did not have any serious incident with your deer!
Thomas, those sculptures cannot last very long in that environment? However the processes of melting ice sculptures can be quite beautiful.
