Rainy arrival of Santa Claus - D850 & AF-S 35mm f/1.8

Unlike some other parts of Europe, we currently have little snow for the season. However, that deficit is "compensated" by intense cold weather, this morning -16C which I personally find quite unpleasant. However the air is crystal clear unless thermoclines interfere and this makes for nice IR shooting. Foliage and structures all are festooned in hoar frost.
Taken this morning with a modified Nikon Z5 and the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8Z. IR 850 filter. The moon was hardly visible to the naked eye yet stood out clear and bright in IR.

Z5 is somewhat better, yes. Neither of them can be said to be really good. though. Acceptable for IR if you find a good lens and go easy on the deep IR.

Nice, but why use the 45MPix frame? Then you have to set jpg quality very low to keep the posted image within our file size limit ??
Much better to reduce pixel size I(say max. 2000 pix on the major axis), then use proper processing to be able to render a tack sharp image. You will then have even smaller file size, and much better results.

The blue banded bees normally show up immediately after sun rise. I find that I have a better chance of getting a good shot early in the morning as they spend a bit longer 'drinking' at each flower (Salvia in this case).

This is from the heart of Manchester, UK, in 2009. (I want to say Cross Street but am not entirely certain.)
When I was photographing my negatives with a D4 there was not much to the work in Photoshop. Mostly setting the white and black points in Levels or Curves. With the Z6, the image occupies a much narrower part of the histogram and effort is required to tease out the contrast. Is this a sign that the Z6's sensor has greater dynamic range?

Hi Frank - learning how to do photo stacking is still on my to do list :-)
If you are still enough and I don't do something silly like bumping into the flowers - they can sometime stay up to 10 seconds. For context, this bee was collecting nectar from the side of the flower (aka nectar robbing) and my camera was pointed down. In most cases though, it will be really quick so I often observe first and see if there's a pattern. Generally I find that I can get a pleasant image in terms of dof/sharpness if I take a shot of the whole be from the side at around f/11. Of course flash & diffuser.
In the field, there might be some use cases for tripod (i.e. male bees roosting at night or waiting for ground nesting bee to emerge from their hole) but in most cases I find hand-holding gives me more flexibility - i.e. bee moving to the next flower.
how long will they hold their position?

A painter's work. The few bird silhouettes add spice, and the few touches of colour lighten the mood.
There are rare cases where the result "out of the camera" looks like processed, where actually it is not, or quite minimally so. Fog, spray, rains, or lens quirks (not a factor here I guess) may contribute to that. Is this such a case?

Yes, I'm not fan of long time spent in front of a screen. I did a minimal up contrast, a bit of saturation, then crop and output sharpening. It is all from the weather, which was, and still is, an anthology of all possible sorts of waters flying everywhere: rain, fog, sea spray, sea foam, waves, puddles ... Even with these conditions, the light of the Opal Coast remains special.
Thank you for the kind words.
-
how long will they hold their position?
Michael Erlewine showed stacked bee pictures some years ago. When I asked the same question, he explained that sometimes, bee spend a night out and sleep on a flower. He was taking the stack while they were warming up, which may take minutes.
I once had a bumble bee stay for 2 days on a muscari flower. It went out during a warm day in February and was trapped by the cold evening. It was so slowed down that I could take multiple pictures of the elongated proboscis, which moved in extreme slow motion. After 2 days the sun came back, and half an hour later, the bumble bee was gone.

Thank you. Great stuff. 90mm is really short.
I do my "insects in flight" with a 300PF plus 1.4E3 Converter so 420 mm focal legth and a very good stabilization in the lens: https://youpic.com/image/15261879/look-no-hands-by-frank-fremerey (https://youpic.com/image/15261879/look-no-hands-by-frank-fremerey)

Yet, I did not use the flash & diffusor system yet. tried it with natural light, so less definition.Thank you again for "Upgrade Ideas"

For me the rendering is nice.
You said much of your work is hand held Adil - I guess flash helps a bit, but the clarity of the eye lenses can be hard to achieve even when you're using a tripod.

Today is a working day, so I am not in a festive mood :-(
But here is Saul, taken with a Viltrox DX 13mm f1.4 Fuji FX lens on a Z50 using the Boryoza Wizmate FX - Z adapter. Terrible name, but it works!
The file was transferred using the dreadful SnapBridge app, and downsized - so please don't judge image quality :-;

Merry Christmas to all !

As the Year is going to end soon, I will say thank you for all the wonderful photos posted here during 2023.
I hope the holidays have been good, and wish you all a happy new year.
A photo from our garden, today we had a little light to shine on the feeding birds.

Cycling in a quite wet environment these days - there is the 'Rheinorange' in the flooded area (high rise - church tower - Rheinorange), the key feature of this ride.
About a hundred'ish + km.
The Iphone 13 has it limits.

great pictures John, Fons and Paco!
Every now and then we need a Neo Noct session.
That's a lens I'm gonna keep even should I sell my D850 one day.

I love the results Adil shares here too.
One aspect of getting right down on the ground (alongside your subjects) is that some of the unexpected ones crawl into your pockets, down you neck or worse!
Thank you! Yes indeed - I have been through some incidents involving large spiders before ;D

We are currently "enjoying" winter in my neck of the woods. With much more snow predicted to arrive shortly and temperatures plummeting to -22C and even towards -40C inland. I'm already discussing with my friend Paco in Cádiz when I can seek relief there, if only for a week or so.
The tiny Voigtländer (by Cosina) 21mm f/4 Skopar in Nikon S mount, on my Z fc. The street lights and and car headlights are insufficient to bring in enough photons thus ISO had to be hiked up to 3200 or thereabouts. Still, shutter speeds were slower than I like and freezing my butt and fingers off didn't do image sharpness much good either.

Birna,
That is a beautiful scene and nice capture, despite the unfortunate hardships it may bring to the area's denizens. Where I am located (central east coast of the US), we are on the edge of yearly snow maps and many residents eagerly await the first snowfall since it transforms the mundane landscape almost overnight. Anticipation for the first snowfalls is vigorously discussed and followed through long range weather models and hopeful interpretations. I trust you can retreat to a warm fireplace when not visiting more southerly locations.
-
Our housing is well insulated and heated, thus being indoors is not a problem. However most photographic opportunities are found elsewhere. Being an asthmatic in addition tends to produce its own share of miseries under such weather conditions. I do like to drive -- fast -- on winter roads though.
Fortunately, Paco apparently was thrilled by my call for a possible NG micro-meetup early next year. As soon as my current commitments are completed and flights booked, I'll be on my way. Paco is no slouch on the roads himself.

View from our kitchen ... apparently, we have a winter condition here :) However, weather forecasts warn of massive amount of new snow and Siberian cold temperatures in the days ahead. Oh well.
Nikon Zf, Cosina-Voigtländer 25mm f/4 Skopar. (on a side note, it is a little unfair to a wide-angle lens to shoot it through triple-glazing windows and expect corner sharpness. The 25 CV did quite well, nonetheless)
