Thanks, Akira !

It's actually the colour of the wall I used as background. I just made it paler as my guitar is black satin (Epiphone Les Paul Gothic) and was quiet dark, so I needed to lighten the image to get more details. ;)

Thanks for noticing Bjørn. I processed the image by enhancing contrast and saturation quite a bit to make the gentle, peaceful morning light contradict the harshness of the graphic elements in the picture.

Another grey day.

Different park, different Crocus. Same lens and now with the close up lens 6T but little effect on a 20mm of course.  The 20/2.8 AF is a fine lens, central sharpness is great, a bit soft corners wide open, little distortion,  some field curvature, but the real advantage with the 20/2.8  is the auto-focus and small and portable size. And the Df seems to like the lens  ;)

Cut out the vignetting caused by the 6T.

March 2017 seems very boring, again grey and rainy.

The heavy storm on February 24th caused quit some damage.

In the nearby 'Wilhelminapark a 125 year old Silver Linden or Silver Lime (Tilia tomentosa) got serious damaged when the complete top of the tree collapsed.  15 meter came down.  It appeared to be a very rare variant of the Silver Linden, the var. Pendula. The coming week experts will check whether the tree can be saved, at least, the remains of the tree...

We're fortunate in the low-elevation coastal regions of northern California to have a relatively mild climate for the so-called temperate zone.   Winters have usually have moderate rainfall and no snow.  There's enough cold to satisfy most deciduous fruit trees, yet actual frost is only an occasional occurrence.

By March it's usually starting to warm up, and we're about to get a burst of plant growth and flowers. Today we had a low-pressure area move through with scattered clouds and rain, and snow on the higher hills, yet at 7 degrees C it was still mild compared to regions with cold winters. So far we've had about 750 mm of rainfall since the rainy season started in October which is well above the average to date.  Other locations favored by topography have had much more.

One of the pleasures this time of the year is the annual flowering of the ornamental plum trees:

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2823/33237423226_c3fe050fcb_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SD5tX9)Plum Blossoms #4 (https://flic.kr/p/SD5tX9) by Bill de Jager (https://www.flickr.com/photos/99349448@N06/), on Flickr

This was taken with the Noct-Nikkor 58mm f/1.2.  The exposure was 1/1000 at f/2 and ISO 64.

Three Fuji GFX

Fuji Roadshow at my brick & mortar dealer this morning.

I will buy this camera as soon as the GFX-bellows for my sinar p2 is ready, which I will order today.

The view finder is nice for slow photography, but not as nice as I had hoped for.

The AF is OK for mirrorless contrast only but it is far off what you can expect from current Olympus offerings.

Manual focus drive-by-wire? I always hated this.

But in the environment I want to use this camera in, as a digital back for professional food photos it is manual focus it is tethering, it is perfect.

PS: The GFX has voice recording per picture as we know and love it from the D2/D3/D4/D5... It is only 30 seconds, but I did never need more than 15 to record a name and function.

PPS: The view finder stutters if you pan. It is quite OK if you hold the camera still. No lag on the rear screen so that is a VF issue

California seems to be at the confluence of over a dozen of so-called "atmospheric rivers" this season which means more rain than in many years past. But it is all to the good as it bring out colors and saturation. In a few weeks these will be cherry blossoms.

Especially Sports and Royalty-watching the Canon seems in the majority often paired with the 'standard' f/2.8 zooms. Carrying two camera's with f/1.4 primes is my usual approach giving a lot more 'optical' flexibility.

I wasn't sure what the translation to English would be, because I wasn't sure which attribute of the light you were referring to.  It turns out that the translation is "oblique light" which is certainly the case on the front of the building.  In any case the lighting creates a very nice effect that complements the clouds in the sky.

Thomas, those crocuses are amazing!

Nice and relaxed shot John. That background sure seems smooth and doesn't have the double lines and nervousness that most of the Nikon's 55/1.2 or 50/1.2 or 50/1.4 often have.
Title: Re: March 2017
Post by: John Geerts on March 19, 2017, 09:24:40
Thanks Peter.

Yes, that did surprise me.  I have the 50/1.4 S-Auto but that has indeed a nervous bokeh. The 5.8cm f/1.4  is far from perfect, field distortion, weak corners but center, DOF and bokeh are great.  It is also part of the Nikkor Thousand and One Tales.

"In terms of the balance between aberrations, this lens was typical of the early Gauss-type lenses. The addition of a convex lens to the front group was superbly effective in correcting spherical aberration. Longitudinal (axial) chromatic aberration and lateral chromatic aberration were both minimized and the astigmatism correction was excellent."   http://www.nikkor.com/story/0040/ (http://www.nikkor.com/story/0040/)

You must have had a lemon, I think. Mine is mint as if it never was used, late serial number,  Ai'd, perfect with exposure, very minor chromatic aberrations and a very low fail-rate for a f/1.4 lens wide open.
Title: Re: March 2017
Post by: John Geerts on March 19, 2017, 14:36:59
Also some kind of Noct?
Looks like it, although I never used a Noct.  "The focal length of 5.8cm represented a trade-off between the decline in performance caused by ensuring the necessary back focus and the need to set a focal length that still fell within the range that would allow the lens to be termed a standard lens. For a short telephoto lens, however, this was a fairly workable focal length. The Noct-Nikkor lens, which was released later with a focal length of 58mm, emulated the 5.8cm f/1.4 in this regard."  http://www.nikkor.com/story/0040/

I compared the bokeh of the lens briefly with the 55/1.2 Ai and 50/1.2 Ai-S and the the 5.8/1.4 is softer and creamier with a more gradual transition.

Thanks Peter.  There are not many chimney's left here. Only a three remained from  the more than hundred chimneys which stood near each Textile mill in the 19th century.

Cool CD's Fons.

Fons, it is a two-shot "panorama" with the Samyang 8mm. I think it was Bjorn who gave the tip of shooting one vertical and one horizontal image and then combining them. It seems to work remarkably well even handheld.

Looks like a photographic painting from the 19th century, Paco.    ;)  Very special effect.

Grey, much colder and rainy, but the Magnolia is unbuttoning slowly....

I like this blossom shot very much!!!

Thanks Peter and Frank.

Very sharp and fresh portrait.  Is it not a bit busy bokeh for a 200/2 wide open, Peter?  Or is that the TC17-effect?

Nice Fons. You like the 20 UD?

Has both the charm and defects you expect from a vintage lens, for modern perfection on digital, look no further than the 20mm f/1.8g.
(i have no shooting experience with the 20mm f/2.8 ais)
Needs a proper touch of postprocessing it fortunately handles well.

I am not a fan of the ''optical perfection" of the f/1.8 G-series  ;)   The 20/2.8 AF I like a lot, it's small, AF and with close focus. (CRC)

Advantage of the UD is very little geometrical distortion.

Can anyone tell me what's going on here? Did he pop a glass eye out, or is that the front element of his Canon? He was so preoccupied I didn't want to bother him.
