[Theme] Pinhole photos

I have done some experiments with "Beercan" lenses on my Z6, just had to try.
The beer can diameter fits snugly onto the camera lens mouth.
Hope you will go experimenting, I have seen some pinhole photos around on NG.

First picture the setup
Second is first test, next one where I tried to make the hole better.
Hole punched with a needle. The length is 11,5cm, so sort of short telephoto.

The picture quality is not as I would like it, the Nikker S series doet better

Nice project Bent.

I've seen some fascinating pinhole results when the exposures have been of the order of several days (I think these used photographic paper inside the cans). Not so easy to do with a valuable camera body attached.

Have you been able to try the effect of using different size pinholes?

These were shot with a combo of Kenko pinhole and x0.45 wide converter.

Akira, your photos looks a lot sharper than mine.
The holes I have made up to now have only been made by a needle, and a problem is the get the material flat again. And maybe also round enough.

Bent, my pinhole is made through a sophisticated process of the optics manufacturer.  It is made of an optical glass with some black coating etched to create a pinhole.  So, the optical quality of the pinhole should be very good.

A DIY pinhole should be tricky but more rewarding when you are successful with it.

Add internal flocking inside the tube (can) to reduce flare and boost contrast.

The pinhole camera has "infinite" DOF, as a matter of fact your tiny specks of dust on the sensor are in perfect focus (your pic #2), a beercan would also be a good tool for determining if your camera's sensor need cleaning. At normal lens operating apertures (below f/8) the specks are barely visible. A tiny pinhole will correspond to an aperture of f/128 or even smaller...

To have a flat hole, you have to have a hard surface on the inside of the can when you punch the hole, the aluminum will yield at the punch point, but the material will stay flat and not be dragged inside the can (think of what a pistol bullet would do).

I used to make pinholes from thin brass. I'd make a dimple with a punch to thin it, polish that smooth, then pierce with a needle into a block of wood. Remove any burrs, hen insert the needle the other direction and twist a bit until it is round and smooth.

Do you sand the hole after puncturing the can? Shops that sell painting supplies for auto painting should sell 1000 to 3000 grit Wet/Dry sandpaper. This fine polishing sand paper might be ideal for dressing the pinhole after puncturing the can.

For blacking enlarging negative carriers I used VHT case paint. It adheres well to bare aluminum and stands up the abuse of hours of darkroom use. The can must be coated inside so I don't know how one might strip the coating away but once removed VHT case paint should be ideal. VH case paint might adhere to the coating inside the can?
