Thank you, John.  Yes, the lens was focused almost at the closest focusing distance of 5m, which is not too close in today's standard.  But the simple optical design seems to struggle even at 5m.

Yes, it is well worth experimenting.  The quick and dirty test suggested that it would perform very well for distant scenes and objects.  I'm looking forward to shoot the moon to see how it is resistant to flare and ghosts.
