Z50 + Megadap + 50/2 Summicron short walk
« on: January 31, 2021, 21:52:48 »
I had a short walk in my local area trying out Z50 with Megadap AF adapter + old 50/2 Summicron lens.
The Megadap was able to hit focus quite fast and seems to do it consistently. Also Summicron is a nice high quality lens even that it may be 65 years old.
The image from the park is at F2. Also image of yellow Covid-19 sign was F2 as far as I remember.
Was a cold afternoon.....

A few more. Also here the Covid19 sign was focus point at F2.
Lens has a bit "vintage look"......some warm maybe little to the "brown" side.....which I like.

The Megadap is an interesting tool. I am happy to hear it seems to work well. It opens the possibility to use a wide variety of lenses with Leica M mount.
Thanks for sharing.

This accessory retains my interest too.

However, the factory warns potential buyers that their megadapt won't be guaranteed if it's not bought from them.

That's said, the ironic situation is that you can make on Z bodies your AFD nikon lenses....Autofocus ! :D

I got my Megadap via a dealer in UK (Amazon UK).

Yes, Nikkor AFD lenses can autofocus "again" using this adapter.
But it could have been nice if the FZ-adapter could do that......or a special version of the FZ-adapter.

For most lenses a M-adapter exists. If you get M-adapters for all your different brands of lenses they will most likely work with Megadap.

An example is the EXA-mount lens on picture. A 35/4.5 (Meyer-Optik).....something from the past. I just tried it.....for the first time.....and as a surprise it can form a sharp image at f4.5...
There is a 100% crop of the "bird".......quite sharp.

Quite nice results !

These Meyer Optik lenses seem to be very good.

I own the M42 30mm f/3.5 Lydith and it outperforms the Carl Zeiss Jena 35mm f/2.8 flektogon... ;)

I was surprised by the result. But a lens which name ends on "gon" is a good starting point.....even that a Flektogon can be outperformed :-)
The Primagon was also made in M42......after some "google reading".

The lens has a min. focus distance at 0.4m and with adapter the min. distance it by guess about 0.3m when lens was set to infinity (as was on previous pictures).
Now I tried to set the lens to 0.4m and tried min. distance with adapter and I will estimate it to be about 0.2m. Then image of "bird" looks like this.

Lens is very good at closeup distance. Still at full aperture (f4.5) :-)

An F mount adapter providing AF for vintage AF lenses could be massive! This quirky adapter shows  what’s possible, and for Nikon such an adaptor would win massive PR support, and a huge number of buyers!

Nikon Z users dreamed of it, (and probably Nikon), Megadap made it !. :D

Techard made one too slightly the same price.

So far,  two are on the market.

Such an adapter for vintage AF Nikkors should use the "screwdriver".....I would get one.

I tried the adapter with an AFD 85/1.4. Some images attached (F1.4 used).
Image of books was with lens set to infinity. Then it can focus down to approx. 2m. Crop shows how details looks. As it is F1.4 it is easy to move just a little bit after focus has locked (used AFS). But I am confident that adapter works. Image of "bird" was focus set to 0.85m (closest native distance on lens). Then I could get to approx. 0.4m with adapter. Crop shows how sharp the lens is. Compared to Primagon the Primagon is best of the two at full aperture :-)   .....85/1.4 shows some CA.

I wonder if the lens performs better set to infinity at close distances. Then I just need a bit of extension to explore that. Internal Focusing is to make AF faster using "screwdriver"?   .....not to optimize close focus like CRC?

Megadap is also useful for lenses that has no focus helicoid like Contax/Kiev lenses (Nikkor S-lenses) and other of that type. But it may be difficult to get an adapter for these without helicoid. Depending on how helicoid is made it can make it difficult to mount on Megadap. If adapter has a focus-knob or other that can obstruct....

Rangefinder lenses like Contax/Kiev and Nikkor S-mount can be difficult to use on Megadap as distance to sensor will be too large.
The experiments I just made was not a success using these lenses.....and try to adapt them.

Now I found a combination that worked with a rangefinder lens for Contax/Kiev camera. A 50/1.5 Jupiter 3. It can focus from infinity to about 0.5m. Seems to work fine.......

Very interesting as I have a closet full of old Nikkor MF lenses (AI and pre-AI).
I've never used an adapter outside the FTZ, so I'm pretty blank. :)
If I get this Megadap adapter, what adapter need I more? A Leica-M to Nikon F? And which one should I get?
I just read (Nikonrumors) there's a new firmware update for the adapter with a significant upgrade for the AF!

If you can adapt all your lenses to M-mount then Megadap should work.....if the M-adapter fits mechanical in Megadap. It is not all Leica M lenses that fits.
Among my M-adapters are some K&F like:
EXA to M
M42 to M
Nik to M
Nik G to M (don't know why I got this adapter as Nikon G-lenses are AFS and can autofocus with FTZ)
C/Y to M

Then for M39 I have a M39 to M42 step-up ring so M42 to M can be used etc. Lot of possibilities :-)
I also have a very thin adapter that adapts Leica M39 to Leica M. Which rings also depends of which distance the lens need to the sensor.
Sometimes you can adapt a lens to physical fit but it will not work because distance to sensor does not match how lens was designed.

Now that I showed that Jupiter-3 fits the Megadap I can show how it performed at f1.5. Last crop is at f2.8 just to show that it is a fine lens stopped down a bit.
It is not very sharp at 1.5 but I think good enough for a portrait. At least it as less CA than the 85/1.4 at full aperture :-)
I used min. distance I could get which is about 0.3m.
