wasnt expecting this to be a lot better than the older one :o :o :o

the older one retained some traits of the tessar where it was based

"Here it is beside the earlier version. Can you identify which lens is the later one?"

If you are trying to identify the Nikkor-S with the early and late optical designs, you won't have much luck because both the lenses shown here have the same optics. These are the later type with the modified gauss design :o :o :)

The older Nikkor-S uses a modified Tessar design, the best way to distinguish them are:
1. the older Nikkor-S is always marked 3.5cm, the newer optical design is always marked 35mm
2. The older lens has a longer barrel - 58mm from the mount, the newer one is more compact at 45.5mm :)

Yes. Put your tick-mark 3.5cm next to the two above, you'll quickly see the differences.

Total production of the Nikkor-S 3.5cm would appear to be less than 7500 units, so pretty uncommon.

Tick-mark lenses are usually regarded as common, yet the total run of tick-mark Nikkor-S 5cm 1:2 lenses is not that much less than the number of 3.5cm lenses of any sort. I haven't checked prices recently but most people don't know the difference between the Nikkor-S 3.5cm and 35mm versions, so if you are lucky you can pick them up cheap :)
