Also previously, NR had mentioned the possible announcement of D850 successor early next year. I look forward to seeing the D6 AF system and the improved customization features in a high-resolution camera body. I will also smile quietly as this will likely change some people's perceptions about progress in DSLR technology.

I would like to see 300mm f/2.8 and 200/2, or 135/2 get a new version with the latest autofocus and optical technology (FL for 200/2 and 300/2.8 ). It wouldn't hurt to make a normal lens closer to Z 50/1.8 S image quality as well. Of course, they might launch something else entirely...

Nikon told me that there would not be a “E-FL” successor of the 300mm f/2.8. But this dates from at least two years ago.

Typically they want to promote what is currently available. :-)

Over half a century, the 200 f2 and 300 f2.8 have been among the venerable icons of Nikon's leading status. Okay... since 1976 the 200 f2 versions have not sold as many copies as the 300 f2.8's but this Fatman continues to stand out against any other fast telephoto. Excellent in its own right, a fast 300 prime have always been a keystone lens for many sports and wildlife shooters; and the 300 f2.8 is still the most affordable of the exotic Nikkor telephotos. A similar argument applies to the 200 f4 Micro-Nikkor (1978) and also the 180 f2.8 (1970).

IN deciding how to refresh/ build up the F and Z systems, presents Nikon's strategists with a combination of novel challenges with both opportunities and tough decisions! They can widen and enliven the options across primes and zooms. This will strengthen the overall system: especially for those who shoot F and Z systems in tandem. Conversely, it makes sense to maintain their leadership in telephotos for the F-mount. Yet some might argue OTTH that telephotos such as a 400 f4S PF and 600 f5.6S will increase investment in their MILC. The higher quality of the Z Teleconverters also underscores another benefit of the Z system - provided the 'Z9' not only materializes but matches the AF of the D5 or better D6.

All considered we photographers face too many unknowns at this stage, while Nikon faces tough decisions given finite resources and strong constraints. Overall, if the Z roadmap holds true, and all these rumours materialize....we are heading into an interesting landscape. By early 2022, potentially (subject to personal budgets especially) Nikonians will be agonizing over an array of impressive products. There soon will be the widened inventory of ~30 Z-Nikkors with solid Z II cameras capped by a Z9 etc; extending across D6 and D880 et al, a D550 possibly and all the F-mount glass, new and classic!

Good to hear that Nikon continues to pay attention to the F system with new SLRs and lenses and that the 120-300 mm wont be the last one. BTW. i'd like to have a D510 as a successor to the D500 with the AF system of the D6 included (and the old battery pack fitting). Regarding lenses there is no information what they are going to do - the 200/2 was such a guiding light, it deserves a FL type successor. Regarding the 300/2,8 i doubt that nikon will cannibalize the 120-300 sales but it would complete the lineup again- for the longer focal lengths there is enough good glass present.
So what is needed: high quality Micro nikkors like AF-S versions of 200 and 70-180 mm
a 65 mm Macro lens up to 5:1 (like Canons)
AF-S Versions of DC lenses
A rework of PC-E series with the mechanical quality of the 19 mm F/4
more PF lenses
upgraded 35mm f/1,4 and similar primes
aren't there sufficient zoom lenses in the F system?
compact 800 mm f/11 and 600 mm f/11?
something completely new

Big yes to AF-S versions of the AF-D Nikkor DC lenses 105mm and 135mm f/2.0 and 180mm f/2.8 ED

They would also be nice to see as Nikkor Z lenses ;)

yes to the 180 mm F/2,8 ED and Nikkor Z DC lenses

For longer lenses it might be possible to use the same optical design for F and Z lenses, just with a different shell, bayonet and flange distance of course
Maybe we see a renewed more lightweight F-mount 400/2,8 as well (in parallel to what will emerge)
to make the list longer
a renewed 180-400/4 TC (with SR glass)
more TC lenses
Redesign of the longer Supertele lineup (with SR glass)
New telezooms (like a 200-600 -same optics as Z-line)
a new 14-24/2,8 (or 11-24) like the Z-version
Competitors for Sigma Art lenses draining Nikons Market- Share

I think Nikon could make these lenses in F-mount but with focus motor technology that is "mirrorless-friendly" so e.g. stepper motor or something that would work well with Z as well.

I dearly love short and medium telephoto primes for their "look" and bokeh and would like more precise AF solution to be implemented. However, for some reason Nikon seem to be confident in the zooms and not listed any medium tele primes in the roadmap (the zooms are great, but not the same thing).

I wholeheartedly agree.  I really want a 105mm f/1.8 S to go with the 50mm.  I find 85mm too short for the long end of a three-prime set.

Nikon hasn't produced any primes with new optical designs in the 135-200mm range since the 135 DC in 1995 (outside of the wonderful but huge 200/2 AFS lenses of specialized use).  I really enjoyed a recent walk with the 180/2.8 AIS.
