Smooth like silk OOF and sharp as a knife in the focal plane indeed
Definitely a different league than the 24/35/58/85mm 1.4Gs
After seeing Erik's report I couldn't resist my GAS any longer. Luckily I found an amazing deal for a LN unit with latest SN  8)
I am now trimming my to go lens kit to the E lenses 8-15mm, 28mm, 105mm, 300mm PF with the Nikon S 50mm in the middle  ;D

I remember that this lens did not get very good review comments at the old "naturfotograf" lens test page:
http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_wide.html

.....my thought was that if lens is not very sharp wide open then I better get an AFS 17-35/2.8.....
Now it seems that this lens is very "hyped" at ebay and other places and may cost more now than when it was new?

You might be thinking of the old screw-drive 28mm f/1.4D. This thread is about the new AF-S one.

Ok....Yes, I was thinking of the old AFD version.....but this old version is quite expensive 2nd hand?

I will have a look at the AFS version......

The old one is still quite expensive. Not as much so as it once was. I was tempted but found a pristine example of the new one for the same price. It was a very easy decision. Here is an example wide open.
