Nikkor 28mm f/1.4E ED
« on: August 09, 2020, 14:20:04 »
Nikkor 28mm f/1.4E ED has been available some years now mine is among the first lenses to come to Denmark, It was not so much sought after since the pros etc who are into these fast primes already had 24mm 1.4G and 35mm 1.4G therefore covered quite well in that focal length range. It was sitting on the shelve, I just bought now ;)It is very much sharper than the rest of this group of lenses, all of the wide 1.4G and even the 24mm 1,8G, 28mm 1.8G and 35mm 1.8G stopped down.
It's in the same league as 105mm 1.4E to give an idea of the image quality.
The possibility of makign seperation and depths in iamges is very appealing for my style.

Saturated colors and the color transitions are just so nice and smooth, a lot of vignetting, darker corners but I like that, draws the subject in in a nice way ;)

Mechanically very nicely made, like the rest of the best 1.4G and E lenses, butter smooth manual focus collar and OK fast to get accurate focus feels a little more speedy that the 1.4G lenses.

Her some samples wide open on D850 outdoors very strong sunlight

And here indoor shot, the 'flowers' are about 1.8 meters,,, after that close and far focus of brickwork and sculpture that show vignetting so nicely.
The Spheres at f/1.4 and last one is at f/11 complete sharpness into corners and diffraction has set in.

Hope you enjoy, I for sure am very pleased  8)

Thank you ;)

Being a RF, rear focus lens makes the rear element come to the very edge of the rear light baffle at infinity setting, so take good care when handling the lens off camera, this is one of the most exposed rear elements I have ever seen on a Nikkor, there is just a tiny tap, 1by 5 mm to help prevent it touching for instance a table if you put down the lens rear end fist.
Both front and rear elements at very large; 55 and 32mm.

Rear light baffle has very deep grooves compared to other Nikkor primes.

Lens hood is the twist and snap type without a lock just as all of the other recent primes. No flocking, just flat black on the inside. Simple but it works, no flare to see so far.

All in all outstanding like the 105mm 1.4E

Lens comes very highly recommend obviously ;)

We will see if there ever will be a Z version of this 28mm optics, I fear it is an 28mm compact lens that is on the roadmap for Z

A substantial lens, both in size and performance. I assume it balances well with the D850.
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the overview and the photos.

Substantial is a good word for the lens ;)
So yes the balance is indeed very good on a D850 with or without the grip!

Naturally it would be nice if the lens was smaller, but I guess it would make the handeling a little more tricky.
The small AF-D lenses are smaller and more compact, compared to the 28mm 1.4 AF-D I used to have it. The new E version is thicker and longer, but the new version is just in an whole other performance league regarding sharpness and saturation, also there is no haze or glare even at f/1.4
Images are crisp and saturated very APO like - Outstanding!

Out of focus highlights and boneheaded balls are neutral without onion rings or hard edge, soft and round, not much cats eyes look so far.

Some abrasions wide open, blue in front, green behind focus plane, easily dealt with.

It's in the same league as 105mm 1.4E to give an idea of the image quality.
The blog at lensrentals ( https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/04/just-mtf-charts-nikon-prime-lenses/ ) shows these two lenses are a step up from the older lenses.

I simply like the first two shots.  They look marvelously pleasant.  Aside from the compositional aspect, the clear contrast between the sharpness and the bokeh would be one of keys to the success of the images.

As for the images of spherical sculptures, I may want to use a lens that offers wider, more aggressive perspective, like a 20mm one.
