Nikon D500?
« on: June 06, 2020, 03:02:01 »
Hello, I was thinking of buying a D500. I don't shoot birds in flight...I mostly shoot local small birds and hummingbirds, and some landscape.
I currently own a D700, D300S, and a D7200. I was going to sell the D7200. I find it it a little slow, as in FPS and focus staying on a subject.

My main concern is:
How is the image quality of the D500?
I know its fast, FPS and has a superb focus system.

Thank-you
Nikon D700, D300s, D7200, D40, Fuji X100, and a bag of old lenses.

-Mike

A Z50 could also be an option?
It has almost same sensor and is cheaper if you buy new?

I have the Z50 and it is a great little camera. I can recommend a kit with 16-50 zoom + ZF adapter.
Z50 autofocus works very well. 16-50 zoom is very compact and good optical quality and in a kit the lens is almost "for free".

Then with ZF adapter you can use your SLR lenses.

The intended uses suggest a D500. It's currently the professional DX alternative.

The Z50 is a cute, endearing little camera, and I enjoy it as such. It does lack the versatility of the D500, and whilst one can mount the FTZ and deploy virtually all F-mount lenses, not all will handle well by this combination. That is in particular true for lenses like 85-135mm class that often do not balance well due to the added length of the FTZ.

Î have a DF, D750 and D500. I shoot mostly insects macro, birds, wildlife and the occasional landscape. The D500 is unambiguously my go to for macro and birds.

I strongly recommend the Nikon D500 for your purpose, it will blow your D300s away, as well as the D7200. Image quality is  good and its resolution is nearly as high as the D850. The 850 are better cameras for oveall IQ it is my most used camera because it is so universally usable, easily travels, is realtivele compact and ligthweight and fast in AF and fps  even with the standard batteries. Sell your D300s or move it in the iron-reserve. The D700 is a decent full format camera aged of course but still more usable imho than the D300(s).

Aaarghh, typo. The D500 is my go to camera, not the D750.

That sounds more reasonable (the D750 is a fine camera nevertheless)

Indeed, I use the D750 more for landscape and low light

Get the D850  it has a D500 inside it and with a 9FPS kit for £200 (ebay item 174309263259 ) its great on the birds.

If price does not matter, the D850 is indeed an option. And according to Geekomak  birds in flight is not the issue here so the IQ advantages of the D850 would count.
But I'd like to contradict that D850 has a D500 inside - thats valid in theory. D500 has more fps without battery grip than the D850 and I find its AF effectively faster as it is covering  a larger part of the frame/viewfinder, it is a more lightweight compact body  and unprecedently fast. I am shooting both cameras and for me D850 cant replace the D500, both have their roles.
