D500 v D850 question Help Please
« on: July 22, 2019, 02:31:44 »
I have a question on TC's which is doing my head in that I'm hoping to get help with.

If I have a 400mm with a 1.4tc on a D500 and I fill the full image frame with a subject, then I have a 600mm with a 1.4tc on a D850 shooting the same subject from same position, will it fill the D850 frame? Or will it fill the Crop frame area (same area as D500 image) in the D850?
Thanks
Brett

A 400mm on a DX camera will fill the frame the same way as a 600mm on an FX camera

A 400mm + TC on DX camera will fill the frame the same way as a 600mm + TC on an FX camera.

The depth of field/background blur/subject isolation will be the same or different depending on the apertures used. If the entrance pupil is the same on both combinations (eg 400/2.8 is roughly the same as 600/4) the DoF will appear more or less the same.

If you consider the DX crop area of an FX camera, you can consider it to be the same as a normal DX camera.

the difference is weight, size, price, resolution.

The same frame is filled with 47 Megapixels instead of 21 Megapixels. That means the amount of pixels per angle of view will be much higher and holding the camera steady will be more of an issue to avoid camera shake.

Both the 2.8/400 and the 4/600 are world class performers. The limiting factor will thus be shooting technique

This is essentially what I was asking. If I find a subject that fills the frame and I shoot the 400mm on D500 it's 21 megapixels. If I stand at the same spot and shoot the same subject with a 600mm on D850 does it fill the frame therefore giving me the same image but at 47 megapixels?

Yes. Exactly.

Not the "same" image but close enough. Perpective, compression, dof, etc... Will change from 400 to 600mm.
The big difference will be 21 to 47 mp.

Paco, I guess it was a hypothetical question about physical conditions ... not a question about artistic aspects ... For me the main point is that I tend to leave the expensive stuff at home because I hate carrying it with me if it is too heavy.

In that sense, the will be probably NO PICTURE, zero pixels for me the D850 and a 4/600 lens. BUT there are already thousands of wonderful pictures taken with my D500 TC14v3 and the 4/300PF lens.

300mm*1.4 = 420mm @997g, delivers good enough images for me. 21 Megapixels on my D500 at an angle of view of a 630mm lens, or 600mm at 3810g. One Stop better and 47MP on my D850.

Ok.
I tried that 300 of yours and it is pretty amazing. I only have 1 lens that I left at home unless it is called for: 300 2.8 but still can relate to your statement. I just came back from a 6 days trip to Almería -gorgeous- and carry the z6, 28mm f2 ai, 60mm f2.8g and 105mm f2.5 ai. I also carry the d750 buy only beacuse Olga was there and she likes to shoot ocasionally. That for me is a very enjoyable, light and capable set to carry around.
