Am I missing something here, or is the M behind D800 just a typo??

Not a typo, although not a real Nikon nomenclature either. Rather one given by the owner after he had his camera physically converted to monochrome.

yes... the color filter array and the microlenses were plasma etched off the sensor and the ICF was replaced with BG-38 glass.  so a true monochrome sensor conversion.

Which RAW converter does support that? Wonderful idea to have a real bw camera!!! Convincing examples.

What’s the advantage compared using the MC profile in the camera?

there are many raw converters for monochrome... AccuRaw requires purchase, DarkTable, RawTherapee, Monochrome2DNG are open...

i have been using DarkTable most often..

i recommend D800's, they are reasonable around 800 USD used with <25k actuations.  I used maxmax.com to do the conversion.

the sensitivity increases, the shadow to highlight increases (dynamic range - within the 14 bit allowed), and the sharpness increases

Great DR in these… my pick is the third for its graphic quality!
Light is free… capturing it is not!
