Even though the moral question surfaces here, whether or not it can be satisfying to use parts of dead animals for personal entertainment, I do believe that in using these parts that were sold as dog chewies, I rather repurposed material originally designated as "left overs" or "waste" towards a personal learning experience.
In making these dice and learning about old scandinavian dice games I hope to find an opening to scandinavian, and more specific, viking culture that I have not personally explored before.
Making these dice, using methods people back then most likely used, and very similar tools as well, at least opens my mind to possibilities far away from the realm of modern day mass production.
I do hope to explore further aspects of viking culture, and do not exclude the possibility of trying my hand at agriculture, baking, woodcraft and leatherworks next.
As a footnote, horn dice sound really different from modern plastic/resin dice when rolled. They have a very pleasant weight and texture, adapt to the temperature of ones hand very pleasantly and they sound beautiful compared to "plastic" dice.
