I should have gone to Scotland this weekend...
« on: February 25, 2018, 23:32:42 »
...instead of the last, when the weather was pitiful.
Instead, this weekend I was at home.

Therefore, no grand Scottish landscapes, but bland English ones...
This is Higger Tor as seen from Burbage Edge, at the outskirts of Sheffield.

You think England is "Bland" and that is what you have captured. "This green and pleasant land"

Bez you took the bait immediately...
The part of the Peak I visited today may have been pleasant, but there was pretty little green around.

Simone:

#3 is my favorite.

Most of the time we are around home, so good to make the best of it!

Simone,
I did, but my narky point was applicable   ....if you set out thinking you are going to see "bland landscapes" that is what you will photograph. That may of been your intention of course?

You have taken wonderful (glorious) landscape images in England previously. Perhaps then you set off with a more optimistic mindset?

But yes I do understand you were unlucky with the weather in Scotland and was venting a little.

Cheers

This location in other times is quite photogenic, especially when the heather is in bloom. Not awe-inspiring (IMHO), but nonetheless evocative and rugged.
At this time of the year up in the High Peak everything is quite drab if there is no snow; the brilliant reds and yellows of autumn have faded, not yet replaced by the greens.
My intention was to have a nice relaxing walk and enjoy the winter sun, photography was more the excuse for getting out.
The blue sky did not make for dramatic views but I am not complaining about it; it is a rare enough treat in winter in England.
As Randy said, most of the time we are at home, so good to make the best of it.

I share with Randy a preference for #3. In fact, I have sat by that overhanging rock quite a while, studying many different slight variations of the composition.

The other interesting thing about the place is that across several km the landscape is "littered" with abandoned mill stones, some complete, others partly carved.
They were left in place when millstone-making activity stopped being lucrative, I wonder how long ago that was.
I had not seen before the one pictured; it is huge, probably around 7 feet in diameter.

Bez you took the words right out of my mouth ;)

Interesting with all the millstones, looks very out of place just lying there,,, :)

Great images!

Simone,
You should of travelled north not south for snow. I am looking out of my window now (second home) as I type, and there is snow still on the top of the lakeland fells.

I must say glistening in the sun they look quite majestic. It is a great pity I am not a landscape photographer else I could capture the scene.

I am glad to hear you enjoyed your walk in the sun. The millstones do look to have good photographic potential to me?

Cheers

I see nothing bland about this post.  :)

The Peak District and Sheffield are East from my home and less than an hour drive.
Going to the Lakes is a whole day out and I didn't have enough time for that.

I am an hour and a half away from your house viewing the fells. I expect an Italian driver could get here in forty five minutes :-)

You know how this Italian drives...
Seriously though, I was also on family duties and time was too limited. It's not like I didn't think about going to the Lakes...

Well from the Duddon estuary aspect the snow has almost gone BEZ...

Perhaps you are seeing the Lake District fells from the North or East?

I was up near the tops on Saturday night and it was blowing a gale and felt VERY cold.

Similar viewpoint to you but different angle, from Heysham across the Bay. Because it was so clear today, and the sun was glistening off the snow remaining on the peaks. From the distance/angle I am away, it may of looked more noticeable.

In any case the snow was creating wonderful sparkling contrast on the peaks for me to enjoy.
