Those heavy metal sheets are used sometimes in my hometown to surround the trees and protect the roots from car tires and pedestrian boots...

Sometimes a few cigarette butts and napkins get stuck (visible in the photo),  they get cleaned on a regular basis.

Thank you for the explanation.  Cool idea.  The same protection plates are used here in Tokyo, too, but they are just heavy metal grids.

It is natural lighting, the plants were in a small pond under the shade, and there was indirect illumination from a very blue sky. The leaves seemed to be glowing with this light.
