Zeiss 135mm f2,0 again!
« on: June 28, 2017, 19:26:21 »
This lens is heavy and it would be nice with a tripod collar but there is no room for that on the lens. Is there any other concept that will spare the bayonet mounting rings on the camera?

If you are writing of the "classic" ZF.2 version, then I agree that Zeiss made the focusing collar too expansive.  Haven't seen the newer Milvus version.

The Nikon mount Milvis 135/2.0 doesn't offer any space for any possible tripod collar between the focus ring and the camera either.

I would also want a tripod collar on any 100mm-class macro/micro lenses.  Canon is the only manufacturer to offer one, so far as I know.

Ok, and thank you for your answers! A Manfrotto lens support could be the thing for me!

I'll suggest being gentle and use an Arca-Swiss compatible L-Bracket on your camera. I prefer RRS L-Brackets. A 135/2.0 lens must be quite heavy for it's size, what? about the same as a 180/2.8 ED? Other brands of Arca-Swiss accessories I like are KES (Kirk Enterprise Solutions) formerly Kirkphoto and Wimberley.

I would like a tripod collar on any 105mm and longer Micro lens. To me the 80-200/4.0 AIS is really long on a tripod. It's not that heavy. The 180/2.8 ED AIS is OK.

I don't mind a tripod collar on a lens I'm hand holding. It's OK if its foot print is a little small but it's NOT OK if its back flexes and if it's locking threads are tiny. Two faults I find with the AF 70-180/4.5-5.6D Micro. A small foot size is OK if it's on a good Arca-Swiss lens lens plate with a channel down the middle, e.g. Wimberley lens plates. Better Arca-Swiss style plates are smooth and rounded.

The foot of the Nikon PN-11 is too small but works OK on a good lens plate. I don't understand a lot of the decisions Nikon has made regarding tripod collars. Some seem to be designed as handles rather than collars.

This funky contraption is great to stablise your heavy lenses: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.5-c-s.w4002-15538360142.30.42e1ecd3h0FXs0&id=541105978825

I'm sure there's generic branded ones on places like Scambay. I remember RRS offering one of these too, can't find it on their website anymore though.
Yep, there is: https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-telephoto-lens-support.html

Well, I would think these stuff only work with the lenses whose barrels don't extend or rotate while focusing or zooming.

If you set the cradle such that it sits roughly in the middle of the lens shade when the lens is at infinity, it will wander to the back of the lens shade when the lens is extended. It could work, but might scar the lens shade over time.

I'm wondering what the problem is that you are trying to solve. Vibrations?

The 180/2.8 is a bit worse IMHO than the 135/2 ZF.2 in terms of leverage exerted on the mount, but this is not based on measurement but just an impression I got from using both lenses. The ZF.2's main fault is perhaps that the focus ring is easily turned accidentally and the focus creeps when the lens is pointed down. Perhaps a different grease could solve the second problem.

Have it set on the lens hood could work.

Gaffer tape the hood.  ;)
