Have you tried to reset all, it is in the camera setup menu.
It will reset all but language, time and time zone.
If this doesn’t help I guess there’s a fault with the camera  :(

I reset the settings when I purchased the body a couple of days ago - and then set it up as I wanted it

excuse my ignorance - how does  sleep mode display? I have display mode set to 4 secs - which means the light goes off after 4 seconds but the info is still on the little screen showing which mode it is in etc

Does it show shutter speed and aperture? If yes there is a fault

No it doesnt show shutterspeed or Aperture

I have taken battery out now - charging it and see how it performs tomorrow :( I am leaving on a safari in a week's time, so I hope I can sort this out sooner rather than later - thanks for trying to help

Perhaps a thought to ponder - I have (finally!) switched to using the BBF which I have never used before - so I may be holding that down far more than I should - its a very new way of shooting for me.

When the sleep mode is activated, the display should look the same as when the camera is switched off (it only shows the remaining frames and the recognized cards, if I remember correctly).

What is BBF?  Best boy friend?!   :o :o :o

Ah - okey the D500 doesnt have a sleep mode - just "stand by" (and you choose for how long - mine set on shortest - 4 secs)

Best Boy Friend needed to buy me a D5 ya

Back Button Focus ;D

D500 doesn't have a sleep mode?  Really?  Again, "sleep mode" may not be the correct term for the menu item.  That being said, if your D500 drains the Li-ion20 battery that fast, something should be going wrong.  D500 is supposed to be more power efficient than the already efficient D750.

And, yes, your best boy friend has to be rich and young.  :D

Stand by mode is supposed to take care of the sleeping bit.

I have now found a lot of complaints about the battery drain via my friend Googling. But no solution that I could see.

Akira - you forgot the rest - nice young rich virile and must cook. Until then - I am stuck with Nikon as a lover haha. It must be a male body giving me all this trouble  ;D ;D
Having said that - it does perform...

The first image is already familiar to me on Facebook.  :)

Hope your D500 is die-hard.  :D

If a recent Nikon is set to AF-C and the lens has VR and VR is switched on and the AF-ON button is pressed then the CPU,  AF-C and VR will all be active and draining the battery (nice run on sentence, yes?). I don't see this as a reason not to use the AF-ON button, AF-C and VR but rather a reason to carry extra batteries. I switch my batteries out when about 50% depleted.

The camera may still have a fault but the features mentioned above all shorten battery life.

Elsa, is this the in-camera battery, or the battery in the grip? Just wondering if a bad connection between grip and body could cause something like this?

Also, there are a couple of other settings in the Setup menu which I would make sure are turned off, just in case.

Such as making sure Bluetooth is not set to "send while off" and Eye-fi is set to disable.

I believe that airplane mode should take care of these, but just in case?

Not using VR
battery drains when in standby mode I not being used
Using battery in body - grip taken off
Bluetooth/wi fi is off when you enable Airplane mode - double checked
