Peleng 8mm f/3.5 fisheye
« on: June 03, 2017, 11:02:21 »
Or rather trial and error with the Peleng 8mm f/3.5.
Bought this on a whim thinking of going circular on fx on the cheap, for these lenses go inexpensive compared to it competitors.

flare is a major problem especially inner lens reflections, i have tried to mitigate the issue in post
but the inner flare on the bottom half of the images remains an issue.

Make a circular mask to solve the issue. Doesn't the Peleng draw a complete circle on your camera? Then, applying the mask might be even more useful.

Apparently the peripheral parts of the drawn circle have poor quality anyway, so it's not like you stand to lose too much information by a gentle circular crop.

The first Nikkor 8 mm f/8 also had too large image circle, 24 mm, for the 24x36 mm format and thus when slides were mounted, the upper and lower parts of the circle were cut off. Hence the appearance of the 7.5 mm soon thereafter, to project a slightly smaller circle. The 10 OP Fisheye despite a longer focal length has a different geometry and even smaller image circle, so no problem on any FX camera.

Thanks for the info, Bjørn, greatly appreciated,
so in all the 10,5mm f/2.8dx is the preferred lens for a circular image, of which the ears are clipped
Took a bit to figure to create a circle crop in ps

Here are some samples from the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 on a D810. It's a lot better than the Peleng, and it is possible to find a used one for a reasonable price.

Please be aware that the mirror on certain Nikon bodies will hit the Peleng at infinity I believe.

If I remember correctly things worked did work fine though at the hyper focal distance and of course no issues on mirrorless.
Cheers,

Here's a few of the crew on a trip in Norway in 2013, all on the D800E.

Thanks.
For these images I used the Post-Crop Vignetting tool in Lightroom to create the "mask". Amount=-100 gives a black mask, and Amount=100 gives a white mask. The resulting mask becomes slightly feathered, which I think adds to the crystal ball look.

My impression the peleng is doing a better job on D500
