Apparently the peripheral parts of the drawn circle have poor quality anyway, so it's not like you stand to lose too much information by a gentle circular crop.
The first Nikkor 8 mm f/8 also had too large image circle, 24 mm, for the 24x36 mm format and thus when slides were mounted, the upper and lower parts of the circle were cut off. Hence the appearance of the 7.5 mm soon thereafter, to project a slightly smaller circle. The 10 OP Fisheye despite a longer focal length has a different geometry and even smaller image circle, so no problem on any FX camera.
