Which TC?
« on: July 10, 2017, 09:49:52 »
Hi, today I use 300/2.8 Nano (VR 1) alone or together with TC 14 III and TC 17 for birding and nature.
I traded in my 2.0 III when I purchased D500 for the TC 14III thinking about the crop factor.
Recently when speaking to a Nikon service rep he said that I should have sticked to the 2.0III because
he thought it was better than the 1.7 on D500!!
Do you agree, should I have kept the 2.0III.
Thanks Krister

The latest TC20E might be a tad better than the TC17, but by far not the equal of the TC14E.Mk3.

I don't personally have the TC-17E but all the MTF tests I've seen suggest that it does retain higher MTF than the TC-20E III. However, the difference is small enough that there may be a bit more subject detail with the TC-20E III as the shot is magnified more. Here is a test of the 300/2.8 with some test chart examples of the TCs about one quarter of the page from the beginning

https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-300mm-f2-8g-vr-ii

To my eye the TC-17E II images posted in that comparison are a bit sharper than the corresponding TC-20E III images but it might be possible to discern a bit more subject detail on the latter (look at the finest rings in the test chart).

I personally own the TC-14E III and TC-20E III and my general feeling is that the TC-20 E III gets a lot of hype but in many practical situations the autofocus performance is reduced sufficiently that it is difficult to get the best sharpness in TC-20E III images (especially in action situations and when there is some additional distance between the camera and the subject) whereas using the TC-14E III with my 70-200/2.8 FL and 200/2 II the autofocus is excellent and image quality reasonably good stopped down a bit. The TC-20E III can give acceptable image quality with these lenses on subjects such as performers in a daylight outdoor concert but I would not recommend the TC-20E III for fast action with these lenses. With the 300/4 PF I get some additional hesitation in the AF using TC-14E III and in many cases in the lighting conditions where I would use it, the 300/4 PF + TC-20 E III can only be focused using live view and not the main autofocus system used in viewfinder photography.  In practice while I've obtained some good results with the TC-20E III, I rarely use it.

I don't know what kind of experience you would have with the 300/2.8 and TC-20E III if you give it a try, but I think you already have the best converter (TC-14E III) and my guess is that the larger converters probably give more grief than joy.

The TC17 does quite well with my old AFS 300/2.8 and also is acceptable with the AFS 200/2. The TC20.3 is OK with the 300 and barely so with the 200.

I rely centrally on TCs for wildlife photography, TC 2 III with the 300 2.8. Selected www reports decided me on the Nikkor 300 2.8 as my core telephoto with TCs. Here are some comparisons reported using Nikkor TCs and telephotos:

Besides core use of the TC20 III with the 300 f2.8G VRII, I also rely on the TC14 II (don't have the 1.7). My 200 f2G VRII also performs very well with the TC20 III, and it retains faster AF compared to the 300 f2.8. But the latter is less challenging to anchor a precise focus, especially on moving subjects.
Black-headed heron with 300 2.8 + TC14 II on D500. A few more posted here with 300 + TC2 III http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,5917.msg99321.html#msg99321

kind regards

I have a few thousand images taken with the Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 VR II combined with the TC20-E III.  All on single digit D bodies (D4s, D5). The results are excellent and no AF or VR issues, despite photographing "high velocity objects":

Thanks guys for your exellent input.
Really food for thought. Will try to borrow a 2.0 tc and test it and see if it is
practical to use with a cropped sensor!?
Thanks, Krister

There's no shortage of Used TC2 III, and most are near Mint. I got mine in London from Grays - last year.
