Best backdrop color?
« on: April 04, 2017, 17:20:34 »
I have been using a grey granite grey backdrop - but it needs replacing now - its a bit finished...
I can only afford to buy one backdrop at a time - they are quite pricey here - but which colour to go for now?
I definitely don't want white (I got that sorted)
Any suggestions - and why?

White, Grey, & Black are the most all around useful backdrops.

If I could only have one I'd go for some shade of middle grey. Add light to it and you can make it white if need be, take light away and it becomes black. If I was shooting fashion I'd go for white. Portraits dark grey. Product, white or black depends on the product.

I think black will go better with your style of shooting

Thank you Charlie and Armando

Charlie  - you are right about making a backdrop white /black - but since I already have mid grey - (only half a length left to work with) my head is also moving towards the black At least I can still add light it I needed it lighter. I appreciate the input from you both. Very expensive so I thought I would put it out there to see what you guys would have done.

Armando - good observation because you know my style of studio shooting.

If you don't rely on the backdrop for the inspiration, you should comfortably be able to stay with the same grey you have been using.  You know how to make the most of it.

A medium to medium dark gray is the single most useful color for a backdrop.  If I could only have one, that'd be the one.

I use color number 9 when working in AutoCAD because it offers the highest possible distinction between all colors of the rainbow.
It's on the light side of gray... Not sure how it would work as a backdrop in your studio, though :)

grey is the most useful or navy blue. just use baby powder to add some discolouration into it to give it new life with a new tie-die look :o :o :o
