NR: Nikkor 500/4 FL VR & 600/4 FL VR are coming
« on: June 29, 2015, 23:58:28 »
For those whom missed the earlier rumours, after upgrading the 400/2.8VR Nikon is apperently planning to do the same with the 500/4VR and 600/4VR.

Expect the use of a Fluorite element, new Fluorine coating, electromagnetic aperture and probably a kilogram less to drag around.

And we could dream up an implementation of an PF element like the 300mm ED AFS VR 4.0...

That would make the 500 4.0 the size of a 300 4.0 and the massive 600mm 4.0 would shrink to 500mm 4.0 size... :) And loose 2 kilos  :o

I think the rumored AFS 16-80/2.8-3.5 is a more interesting lens to most, not least because it is more affordable. This is obviously an upgrade to the current 16-85/3.5-5.6 VR. The lens looks remarkable in a number of areas. Compared to the current 16-85 it is half a stop faster at the wide end, and one and a half stops faster at the long end. It's almost a constant aperture zoom, dropping just a shade over 1/2 stop at the long end. That's a huge improvement. The new lens appears to be very compact, judging from the pictures on nikonrumors, the filter size is 67mm, the same size as the older version. That is amazing considering how much faster it is than the old version.

In some ways it parallels the upgrade of the older variable aperture 24-120/3.5-5.6 to the current 24-120/4, although in this case it's not quite a constant aperture zoom. The faster aperture of the 16-80 means the DOF and ability to isolate subjects is almost the same as the FX equivalent.

The rumors also state it has an electronic diaphram, which is the first time we see this feature on a "normal" lens. So far it has been restricted to tilt-shift lenses and super telephotos. A sign of things to come.

This lens could also be considered an replacement for the DX 17-55/2.8. In exchange for dropping just a half stop you get:
- VR, which largely compensates for the slower aperture at the long end
- zooms wider to 16mm, giving a true 24mm equivalent angle of view
- zooms significantly further
- nano coat means it should be more resistant to flare - one of the weak points of the 17-55
- fluorine coating
- it's also much smaller
It remains to be seen whether the optical or build quality is as good, from the appearance the build looks more mid-range rather than professional level, but overall it seems to be a very promising lens for the DX user.

The picture on Nikonrumors is not of the current 16-85/3.5-5.6. But it could be a composite image and not the real thing, so maybe I got ahead of myself... We'll find out soon enough.

Slightly surprised there is no mention of an update for the 300f2.8vrII, it would equally benefit from
the inclusion of fluorite glass, less weight and generally improved optical performance. I also think it
it would prove to be a top seller as 300f2.8 with teleconverters or used naked on fx or dx bodies proves very effective for many subjects
where extreme reach isn't the primary concern!

It will come surely, as well the 200 f2 VR, but later as weight is not such an issue.

Nikon just half a year ago introduced the 300/4E so maybe now's not the best time to introduce another 300mm prime. I'm sure the FL versions of the 200/2 and 300/2.8 are coming when they're ready.

The lenses are officially announced. Nikonrumors was correct with the specs (except it is f/4 at the long end, and 72mm filter not 67mm as I guessed). It is still an incredible package - fast, good range, focuses close, small and lightweight. MTF charts look good too.

As for the super telephotos, Nikon usually updates the 300/2.8 first, as they did with the AF-I, AF-S, AF-S II and VR. The fact the 400, 500 and 600 telephotos have appeared earlier this time may mean Fluorite is not required for shorter focal lengths. However I expect new 300/2.8, 200/2 and 200-400/4 versions will appear sooner or later with electronic apertures, fluorine coatings, if not fluorite lenses as well.

A small nit pick: it's fluorine , not fluorite, coating. Fluorite elements are used in the newer long Nikkors and add an FL designation to the already overloaded lens nomenclature. Fluorine probably is absorbed by the SIC (sic) coating abbreviation.

These fluorine coatings help keep the front elements remarkably free of dirt,  apparently. My only experience is with the 300 PF and here it really works.

They are a little lighter than the correspnding Canon lenses, but also more expensive.

According to DPReview:  500mm: 10,299 600mm: 12,299 Available Mid-July.

I agree it is really great. I am glad that Nikon is now including it in shorter focal length lenses as well (i.e. the 16-80) because e.g. in wedding photography (and some other events), sometimes there is stuff flying in the air and it is good to have a front element that is easily kept clean. I haven't had any problems with that respect but when cleaning is needed, it can be difficult to avoid at least some residue towards the edges of the front element. I look forward to a fluorine coated 24-70/2.8.

I am happy to see a new DX standard zoom with faster maximum aperture than the many f/4-5.6 variants but less expensive and smaller than the 17-55/2.8.

Suppose I  have to get one of them, In particular if going to Svalbard shooting ice bears, lol.
The 500mm looks tempting.
