# mars 5.

New comers at home for the weekend. In the school where my girlfriend works, a batch of 10 hen eggs arrived in an incubator few days ago, ready to hatch. Thus, the pupils can observe  the hatching. take pictures, drawing and most importantly, learn.

So, my girlfriend is the mother for the weekend !

March 2017 seems very boring, again grey and rainy.

The heavy storm on February 24th caused quit some damage.

In the nearby 'Wilhelminapark a 125 year old Silver Linden or Silver Lime (Tilia tomentosa) got serious damaged when the complete top of the tree collapsed.  15 meter came down.  It appeared to be a very rare variant of the Silver Linden, the var. Pendula. The coming week experts will check whether the tree can be saved, at least, the remains of the tree...

We're fortunate in the low-elevation coastal regions of northern California to have a relatively mild climate for the so-called temperate zone.   Winters have usually have moderate rainfall and no snow.  There's enough cold to satisfy most deciduous fruit trees, yet actual frost is only an occasional occurrence.

By March it's usually starting to warm up, and we're about to get a burst of plant growth and flowers. Today we had a low-pressure area move through with scattered clouds and rain, and snow on the higher hills, yet at 7 degrees C it was still mild compared to regions with cold winters. So far we've had about 750 mm of rainfall since the rainy season started in October which is well above the average to date.  Other locations favored by topography have had much more.

One of the pleasures this time of the year is the annual flowering of the ornamental plum trees:

Plum Blossoms #4 by Bill de Jager, on Flickr

This was taken with the Noct-Nikkor 58mm f/1.2.  The exposure was 1/1000 at f/2 and ISO 64.

Three Fuji GFX

Fuji Roadshow at my brick & mortar dealer this morning.

I will buy this camera as soon as the GFX-bellows for my sinar p2 is ready, which I will order today.

The view finder is nice for slow photography, but not as nice as I had hoped for.

The AF is OK for mirrorless contrast only but it is far off what you can expect from current Olympus offerings.

Manual focus drive-by-wire? I always hated this.

But in the environment I want to use this camera in, as a digital back for professional food photos it is manual focus it is tethering, it is perfect.

PS: The GFX has voice recording per picture as we know and love it from the D2/D3/D4/D5... It is only 30 seconds, but I did never need more than 15 to record a name and function.

PPS: The view finder stutters if you pan. It is quite OK if you hold the camera still. No lag on the rear screen so that is a VF issue

Still grey and rainy, but the sun shows up now and then. And nature develops itself as the light and sun gets stronger...

California seems to be at the confluence of over a dozen of so-called "atmospheric rivers" this season which means more rain than in many years past. But it is all to the good as it bring out colors and saturation. In a few weeks these will be cherry blossoms.

On my way home from work yesterday. Our house is on top of the island to the left in the middle distance.
