In strongly acidified lakes, the primary biological response might be a massive proliferation of thread-like algae.  Amongst a lot of ecological ramifications, these algae might act as a diffraction grating for incident sunlight. The phenomenon is plainly visible in this underwater scene with diatomaceous algae and pads of hybrid Yellow Water lily (Nuphar lutea x pumila).

A Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) shaped by the steady, relentless wind from the sea.

This tree is probably one of the most frequently photographed in the whole country, thus making it hard to come up with a non-trivial picture of it. This is probably the one of many taken by me over the years that pleases me the most.

All the members from Northern climates might have seen their fill of snow, but I must travel to the mountains to find it. Here, a tree by the shore of never freezing Lake Tahoe. Lily pads do not grow there either.

Lots of beautiful pictures in this thread, but I take my hat off for some of the visual gem`s that Bjørn present here. Very inspirational, and dead lake take me back to some of my childhood nightmares after watching "Fjernsynsteateret" and Bergstrøms movie "De dødes tjern" as a child.

'Dead Lake' (Dausjøen) is the favourite amongst my nearby lakes for sure. It is situated in a depression in the bedrock and little light illuminates the dark brooding surface of it during 7-8 months of the year.

There is no sense of true scale here, thus your claim is understandable.

In reality we are looking at a tiny patch of the surface, probably less than an A4 sheet of  paper.
