Lens cap ideas to fit Nikon lens hoods?

I prefer to keep lens hoods on my lenses in the shooting possition to save time when changing a lens. I also have problems with filter size Nikon caps coming off in the bag. I'd like caps to fit Nikon HB-72, HB-47 and HB-38 hoods. Any ideas are welcome.

I'm afraid I cannot help for HB-72.

But for HB-47 (if you use 50/1.8G and not 1.4G) and HB-38, you can screw in the step-down rings to use lens caps of smaller size, which enables you to put on and off  the caps much easier.  I use a 58-52mm step-down ring on my 50/1.8G.  I don't have the Micro 105 VR, but a 62-58 ring should work.  For the 50/1.4G, the ring might cause vignetting because of the larger front element.

With the hood put in the shooting orientation, I would think the hoods would prevent the caps to fall off in the bag.

David, you may be able to make your own from empty plastic soft drinks bottles.

The model aeroplane fraternity mould plastic canopies and cockpits from such materials by heating them and pulling the softened material over formers.  When cool, the plastic is separated from the former and trimmed, and hey presto the model cockpit is revealed.

I will try and find some links for you, but it is not a difficult process.

David , you can try flat sheets of say, 1 cm thick polystyrene. This is light, easy to cut, can slightly compress snugly into place etc. It is quite ideal for this job. Mongo made the very lid you mentioned for his 200-500mm hood. Also added a small string to pull the lid out with and to hang loosely below the lens when not in use.

You may also get lucky with say, a perfectly fitting plastic lid from some common product you may .... jars etc. Good luck.

Another vote for the lenscoat items. I use several of them over the hoods.
