Who is good at dismantling Cameras.
« on: November 21, 2016, 11:33:52 »
I use a D3300 as a video recorder for wedding services...it takes its input from a Tascam mixer via the microphone 3.5mm jack.
Yesterday the end of the 3.5mm jack broke off ..just the very end bit...and is inside the camera socket..
So how do I gain access / open the camera case. ?  It only cost me £180  less than Nikon will charge to fix it .
or    do I take a needle and put a blob of epoxy on the eye end and lower it into the socket and let it stick to the bit that's in there ..??  then pull it out ...

Epoxy glue can cause issues later if it goes into the wrong places ....

Can you see the end of the broken plug? If so, perhaps use a thin screwdriver or similar object flat at the end with a drop of superglue on it, then push into the port to make it stick to the end of the plug.

Plugs should not break off like that. Ensure you use quality items and avoid drag or pressure on the contacts.

For superglue to set you need to exclude the air .....I think I will slide some 3.5mm sleeve down into the hole to avoid my epoxy getting on the contacts and then put my needle down the centre ...

unless of course I can find out how to open the case....

Sadly the construction is not the same buy it shows that even if I can get the case off the access will not be easy....think its the tube and glue approach ..maybe next week will have a go and let you know how it goes ..or not.
looking again it may be possible to put some glue inside the end of the broken connector and re unite the two.....

Since one cannot see it from here, I may be all wet, but am wondering if the broken piece is in any way hollow.  If so, one possibility might be to find a small but sharp screw, and see if you can screw it in to the end of the broken piece just enough to pull it out.  The spring holding it is likely not too strong, so it should not take a great deal of pulling force to pull it out if you're very careful.

If the broken part is made of plated brass, as it might be, it might even be possible to drill a tiny bit into it, but you'd have to be very careful of chips and debris.  One of the handiest things I've ever had was a kit of tiny twist drills made originally for cleaning the tips of welding torches.  The kit was crazily cheap, and the drills very very small.  I've used them for all sorts of non welding applications such as extraction, carburetor jets, and the like over the years.  The kit has a hollow handled hand chuck, drills inserted in the chuck, stored in the handle.

The diameter at the broken point is Ø1mm, I would strongly advice not to start drilling inside the camera,,,  :o

With a thin dental scaler you might be able to actuate the spring enough to loosen the grip,,,

The piece that came out is hollow and I cannot grab the bit that's in ..so have a very thin walled 3.5mm tube pushed in an going to stick a needle ..eye first down the tube with some best quality marine epoxy stiffened with flour so it does not run everywhere and stick it in permanently .....that's the theory....
Will let you know .

I have another solution ....sell it on ebay  and buy another.

This doesn't cause a problem if using the camera as a still camera does it? What about selling the camera as is revealing the issue.

I'd get a quote from Nikon first and if it's not economical the have the piece removed then sell the camera.

Sorry this happened

When I was young I was very good at dismantling things. Not in the opposite process.
Maybe I'm still the same. Don't let me put the hands in your camera.
I think that's why I became an engineer.

All I loose is the ebay charges .
Could not get a repair ..no parts available.
