[long time series] A bridge under construction.
« on: November 09, 2016, 13:28:04 »
A bridge under construction. Series over the time the reconstruction needs ... two or three years.

Background information: Bonn was once an undived city. On 15. February 1844 the first part of the division had taken place when the train route from Cologne opened.  It was finalized on 18. October 1855, when the southern extension of that train track was taken under steam. All the roads and alleys were cut in half, all connections lost.

Therefore tunnels and bridges were built in the aftermath of the devision to reconnect the now divided parts of Bonn.

One of these bridges is called "Victoriabrücke" and was originally errectet in 1905, destroyed in WW2, replaced on 22. December 1949 and extended in 1963, the construction we see today.

My first set of pictures shows how badly this bridge is damaged by rust and the load of traffic that was counted in 2006 at 34.000 vehicles per day. The bridge is closed for heavy lories above 16 tons since 2010, because it is not considered stable enogh anymore.

Currently half the bridge is closed for traffic, torn down and destined to be replaced.

good thing maintenance is done, we had a similar renewal a couple of years ago

traffic gets more complicated as the construction is ongoing, but has to be done

Your hi-res rig does justice to the motifs.  Really enjoyable series.

Frank, I much prefer the pics with DOF taken with oly and Nikon 105mm stopped down (f/5, f/5.6) than the ones at full aperture (f/1.4), cause they suit better for documentation. (except the pics showing close action, though).
Very useful historical references, making your reportage interesting.
Huge works, by the way.

Francis: I prefer f/4 or f/5.6 for documentation as you do too, yet, some of the scenes are more emotional graphical colorscapes, not documentation, e.g. the very first shot with focus on the blue jacket biker

thank you, Akira. I love the concrete surfaces worn and new. they feel almost tactile in my eyes.

they have a tendency to let public goods rot until you cannot save them anymore...

OK. Next stage, yesterday: they broke down most of the old bridge head and started rebuilding it. The bridge head on the opposite side and the Walls that will support the new bridege are already new.

OK. Next stage, yesterday: they broke down most of the old bridge head and started rebuilding it. The bridge head on the opposite side and the Walls that will support the new bridege are already new. heavy anchors hold the part in place which is still in use. before they cut away a lot of the bridge they drilled deep and put rebar boxes inside the drill holes later flooded with concrete to make foundation columns...

Here you can see some of the stages of bridge history: blocks of stone, triple thick brick walls, reinforced concrete structures ...

Sorry about the last one. it is clearly misfocussed. I will try to get a clear shot later this week.

Elaborate brick work.  Should be tough to break down.
