As for the sharpening aspect I find it seems to be dependant on the monitors folks are using, on my apple 27"imac they appear ok,
I think monitors with very high contrast can make images appear more sharp.
I don't worry too much about web images though I try to be careful, obviously it's more critical to get sharpening spot on for prints.
The 400 f2.8 fl e renders images with a very high native sharpness already, perhaps more so than any lens I've owned previous including Nikon's fast prime telephotos.
