Would I be correct in assuming that this same vulnerability is present in the D800 and D300s?

You won't able to see any cracks because the ceramic plate is inside of the front shroud.

that eggshell looking thing is very sensitive and delicate, I have seen a few being replaced in from of my eyes before :o :o :o it's a 20min job. which is long for service center standards.

Maybe Nikon USA can get it out the door for less than $300.

$300 seems to be about the standard fee.

Update: this morning both my AFS lenses refused to work. Whatever is wrong seems to be a deteriorating condition!

.  If I understood you correctly, your camera just returned from Nikon service. Isn't it the route to the new problem? You have a warranty now, use it. Good luck!  LZ

I shipped it off this afternoon. Yes, the shutter repair is under warranty however, it is still to be determined if the problem is related or was caused by the technician. I really don't care. I just want it repaired and returned quickly.
