Supporter reluctantly out of the closet in Norway
« on: September 23, 2016, 12:58:25 »
Hi,

I'm a supporter since February this year.

My daughter gave me a Canon 40D well used, and no lense in January this year. In 1980 I owned a Canon 135/2 lens. In my search on the Internet for a lens to the 40D I recall that the 135/2 made nice photos more or less independent of the photographer. So naturally again, I thaught a good lens would do the trick without me struggeling too much. After quite some research, an ad on a local foto.no page seemed promising, but unfortenately it was a Nikon mount. So what to do? Price approx 2000 $.

The seller warned me it was probably a bit expensive for an amateur, and in addition I would probably have to buy a new camera.

Today I own a 125/2.5 apo lanthar a D3s, and still happy as a fiddle. And after buying the lens I discovered NikonGear as the easiest source of reliable information in a friendly atmosphere. Thanks to those who add posts more frequently than me, thank you.

The lense is absolutely a fierce one, and requires some attention to "nail it". I got so inspired I started a local magazine, in paper. Not yet available online, but I will post a link as Christmas present for you in desember, the magazine is called "Ifosen".

I`m renting the yellow building https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadsbygd_presteg%C3%A5rd and enjoy the enormous amount of gardening required,  http://rosehagen-roser.blogspot.no/

As a serious "nonposting" member, I will ofcourse answer any reasonable question you may have.

Dear Bjorn or is it Bjørn?

I love it that you kind of replied to my request that I put out of sheer curiosity: http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,4318.0.html

From a Canon 40D to an APO-Lanthar with a D3s is quite a step up.

I'd love to see some of the pictures you take with that combination!°

Wonderful to have you as a reader and supporter ,,, maybe one day you will share more???

Frank

Hi Frank,

Ofcourse it is Bjørn, just an old habit of writnig Bjorn when in English.

Actually I`m totally ignorant of how to process a picture on a computer, so my files are raw and jpg of considerable size, so if it is OK with you, I delay a tiny bit, since I`m in the prosess of installing Lightroom.

Coming out of the closet is a big step for me, but a small step for mankind. Trying to peek out the entrance door another day perhaps.

Welcome to NG Bjørn!
I know the feeling of jumping into something - boots and all. Its a great challenge, good learning curve and lots of fun with wonderful payback.
I hope you enjoy Nikongear as much as I do.

Thank you Elsa,

I turn 60 this fall, so I treated myself to some photo equipment. And to be sure to not fall asleep between 60 and 100, I started a magazine as well, actually with an even steeper learning curve than photograpy. I borrowed my first camera at age 12, and bought some slide film. But have been out of photography the last 25 years. And yes I'm a Facebook "hater", and do not think much of discussion forums and (anti)social media. NikonGear, on the other hand, a big positive surprise. All honour to the moderators. In fact I`m surprised not all users pay the minimalistic fee.

Bjørn - we are a close community and many of us have "known" one another for many many years on a similar forum. So we are past the stage of fighting about gear, who has a good / bad photo and all that jazz. In fact - you will sometimes see photos here that would be dismissed on other forums - because we recognise more than just a pretty chocolate box picture. We recognise humans behind the camera and share common interests. Sure we don't always like one another,   so we need new blood otherwise this will be a very boring forum :)
Share your thoughts as we are interested in what other's have to say. BTW 60 is the new 40.

So ... I am the ne 30???? Haha.

You can ask here how to process and someone will help you or hint you to good sources of information.

I am not the father of NG. This is Bjørn Rørslett. And the mother might be Andrea B.

Then there is JA Jakov and Erik as babysitters.

I am just a Supporter as you are and a regular contributer to both the old site and the new site.

Hi,

Thanks to Eric and Jakov, I`ve been following the forum for some time, so I`m well aware who took the initiative  and started the forum. But after a good many fairly sane posts, a not so serious title as stepfather or uncle? You have anyways shared your concern about us missing members of the family Frank.

Hi,

Here comes some photos taken with the Bjørn Bjørn lens.

I realized, some of my jpg files are within the limits regarding size, the raw files are "better" but too big. Probably quite some improvement can be made in post processing, its yet to be learned. I figure a tread without a single photo is "missing the point", enjoy.

Hello from another Canon FD 135/2 owner (bought around 1987). I still have it, together with a T90, but I'd rather use it now on an Olympus OM-D with adapter.

Nostalgia (among other things) made me buy the Zeiss 135/2 that I can use on Nikon bodies.

Welcome "out of the closet".

There are many concepts that need to be understood in the digital world. For example, file size can be expressed by its pixel dimensions (width x height), or the required megabytes for its storage. The limits on NG, as with many other internet forums, are the  storage sizes. With  very high number of pixels, the file (.jpg) must be compressed heavily to fit within the storage limits, and quality *will* suffer. Thus it is much more prudent to reduce the file size in pixels first to be able to present the file with good quality yet keep it inside the storage size limit.

Never ever think of presenting "RAW" files. They are like negatives of the film days and require dedicated processing before they become viewable. Besides, their sheer size will prevent them from being acceptable anyway.
