Detailing the Nikon F (series)

Hello, guys! some bas7@5D (Yahoo! Auctions) sold me an F that looked great on the outside but came with a dead photomic prism. really dishonest, but I got it for $100 so i guess it's quits. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. ::)

I will make a series on how I detailed this beautiful camera to make it look as good as I can. Luckily, the body is OK and almost scratch-free. From my experience restoring old cars before, anything that has to do with the body is very expensive! I would rather buy a car with bad electronics and mechanicals but the body, upholstery and fittings are OK rather than fix the body and hunt for these cosmetic parts. body work is not cheap!

I hope that you enjoy it! :o :o :o

Body work is not cheap indeed! I learned that the hard way. My Nikon F looks like quite the beater, but the mechanics are just about as good as new.

For me, this makes me like the camera maybe even more because I can just pick it up, put it on the car dashboard when not using it, stow it in my coat pocket without worrying about adding a further scratch to the exterior.

In the meantime the camera let's me take pictures as much as I want.

Still, taking care of these old cameras is something that should not be taken light hearted. 60 year old precision mechanics do need to be cared for or they will fail sooner or later

i am actually amazed by how robust Nikon's cameras are. Leicas in this condition would usually exhibit problems with the slow gear and other things :o :o :o

Very helpful guide. There is a lot of foam in contact with the prism. I do not particularly like that

Great job Rick!  I enjoyed reading it, although it will be a while before I venture beyond lenses...
