Did you use a Silver Effex preset or did you customize one?

It's been a couple of years, so I don't remember what I did to it.

I see clouds.  I'm not sure what artifacts are.

Posterization or banding in this case. The grey tones in the sky do not smoothly blend into one another, instead they abruptly transitions between lighter and darker shades. Similar to the effect of changing a monitor display setting from millions of colors to 128 colors.

It is a quite nice picture otherwise though.

If you don't see it on your screen you might want to recheck the screen calibration.

That chair deserves to be shown properly ;-)

I only notice posterization on the third picture (chair). Otherwise, excellent pictures !

Mr Floyd - thats unfortunately a side-effect of Nik. And noise. It tends to introduce some.
I love Nik silver efex - but can never risk using those on any images for stock. For my portfolio though - its magic!!

I'm not a very keen user of filters.  But now that I have installed the Nik / Google ones, including Silver Effex, I will have a try and try to find out under which conditions a posterization effect is generated (8 bit conversion ?).

MF, I've been playing with Nik for a few years now.  What I've learned so far is that I have to be very careful with Dynamic contrast, Detail extractor (or fine  structure slider) and Tonal Contrast.  It is the use of sliders and control points that are very important and I have to get better at.  I'm still missing CNX2 with Nik's U point Tech and Selective tools and still use it for my older cameras .
Re: Chair image, skies are where I find most of my posterization . Of course sharpening artifacts which can be made even worse, more obvious, with some Nik PP. 

I will be very interested in your findings

The stool is a very convincing use of a close perspective and quite possible a wide angle lens too. !
